TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The Manchester University men's and women's swimming & diving teams rewrote the record book with new school records and improved performances at the 2020 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Swimming & Diving Championships.

Franklin College repeated as HCAC champions in both genders, with the women earning 832.5 points. The Franklin men narrowly edged Rose-Hulman 721-713. The Transylvania women tallied 405 team points for a runner-up finish, while the AU women rounded out the top three with 356.5 team points. The Anderson men registered 215 points to close out the top three slots.

The Manchester women earned 90 points over the three-day event while the men earned 17 points.

Junior Shelby Kell (Morristown, Ind./Eastern Hancock) led strong team performances for the Black & Gold in Terre Haute. Kell set new school records in the 50-yard freestyle, the 200-yard freestyle, and the 500-yard freestyle. Shelby's time of 2:02.75 earned her an eighth-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle. Kell posted a time of 5:36.63 in the 500-yard freestyle. She added another eight-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle event, finishing with a time of 56.27.

The women's 200-yard freestyle relay team of Kell, Katie Blystone, Jimena Torres, and Maria Wells set a new school record at the HCAC Championships. Their time of 1:45.54 earned them a fifth-place finish on the podium. The same group also placed sixth in the 200-yard medley relay with a final time of 2:02.49.

Kell, Blystone, Wells, and Mackenzie Hoover teamed up for sixth-place finishes in the 400-yard freestyle (3:56.52) and 800-yard freestyle relays (8:41.20).

For the men, senior Christain Poole (Anderson, Ind./Anderson) closed out his Black & Gold career with a pair new school records. Poole placed ninth overall in the 100-yard butterfly with a program-best time of 53.00.  Poole added another school record in 100-freestyle with a time of 47.81. Christain earned a seventh-place finish in the event.

Over the three-day event, Poole added an eighth-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle with a final time of 21.83.


Indoor Track and Field Wraps up Competition at DePauw


GREENCASTLE, Ind. – The Manchester University men's and women's indoor track and field teams competed at the DePauw Indoor Invitational on Saturday February 15. 15 different teams were represented, including five other HCAC institutions. On the day, the Manchester women placed earned a 10th-place finish while the men ended the day in 11th-place.

Senior Ana Acevedo (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton) led the way for the Spartans, earning an event win in the in the 800 meter race with a time of 2:18.85. Acevedo's time was a new personal record and was the second fastest time in school history in the event. Junior Meagan Trimpey (Bowling Green, Ohio/Bowling Green) placed fourth in the pole vault with after clearing a height of 10' (3.05m). Trimpey's height was the third-best height cleared in program history.

On the men's side, the distance medley relay team crossed the finish line in 11:13.79, good enough for a thrid-place finish. Brian Hochstetler (Elkhart, Ind./Concrod) aired out a distance of 45' 4 1/4" (13.82m) in the shotput, also securing a thir-place finish. In the triple jump, Justin Meredith (Franklin, Ind./Southwestern) jumped 38' 9 1/2" (11.82m) to lock up a fourth-place finish.

Both teams will be back in action next weekend in Terre Haute, Ind. for the 2020 HCAC Indoor Championships on Saturday, February 22. The meet is scheduled to begin at 1pm.



Spartans Topped by Transy

NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind. – The Manchester University men's team fell in HCAC play to Transylvania University 77-62 on Saturday in Stauffer-Wolfe Arena.

The Spartans remained neck-and-neck with the Pioneers for a majority of Saturday's contest, before a late TU run broke the game open. Jalen Owens (Terre Haute, Ind./Terre Haute) capped the first half with a buzzer-beating 3-pointer that put the Spartans ahead 42-39. It was Owens' second halftime buzzer-beater this season.

Overall, Manchester shot 38.5 percent (25-65) for the game and 27 percent (10-37) from behind the arc. MU was led in scoring by Matthew Westman (Michigan City, Ind./Michigan City) with 13 points. DeMoines Whitney (Detroit, Mich./Western International) added 11 points and five assists. Jalen Owens chipped in 10 points. CJ Hampton (Hammond, Ind./Griffith) grabbed a team-high nine rebounds for the Spartans.

For the Pioneers, four starters finished in double digits in scoring. Lucas Gentry led Transylvania with a double-double, finishing with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Gabe Schmitt added 16 points. As a team, Transylvania shot 48.2 percent (27-56) from field-goal range and an impressive 55.6 percent (10-18) from downtown.

The Spartans moved to 8-15 overall, 6-10 in the HCAC following the loss. Transylvania jumped into a first-place tie with Franklin College, moving to 15-8 overall and 11-5 in the HCAC. Manchester will be back on the hardwood at conference rival Anderson University on Wednesday, February 19 with a 7:30 p.m. tipoff.


Wrestling Battles Regional Foes at Mid-States


CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. - The Manchester University wrestling team competed at the Mid-States Invitational on Saturday afternoon. Manchester was one of 11 schools competing in the invite.

Fourth-ranked Wabash College won the invite with an overall team score of 167 points. No. 18 Olivet College (111 points) and Alma College (108 points) rounded out the top three finishes. The Spartans placed 10th and earned 29 points.

Freshman Devontay Moore (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) placed sixth in the 184-lb weight class. Shane Stits (Center Grove, Ind./Center Grove) placed seventh at 184-lbs.

Freshman James Corgan (Hobart, Ind./Hobart) earned an eighth-place finish at 125-lbs.

Manchester will return to the mats on February 28 at the NCAA Division III Central Region Championships.

Manchester Downed by Nationally Ranked Pioneers

NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind. – The Manchester women's basketball team fell to the HCAC frontrunner Transylvania Pioneers by a final score of 87-35. Entering the contest, Transy was ranked 8th in the nation.

Senior captain Nicole Weaver (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead) led the Spartans in scoring with eight points. Macy Miller (Huntertown, Ind./Carroll) chipped in seven points, and freshman Hannah Lindsey (Speedway, Ind/.Speedway) grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.

Transylvaina's length on defense was difficult to break down as the Spartans shot just 15.1 percent (11-73) from the floor and 11.1 percent (4-36) from three-point terrirtory.

Transy was led by Shelby Boyle. She finished with 17 points and 13 rebounds, both game-highs. Calynn Jackson finished with 13 points off the bench.

As a team, the Pioneers shot 51.6 (32-62) from field-goal range and 35.7 percent (10-28) from behind the arc.

The Spartans (8-15, 5-11 HCAC) will be back in action on Wednesday, February 19, versus conference foe Anderson University. Tipoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. in Stauffer-Wolfe Arena.

Transylvania won their 19th consecutive game and improved to 22-1, 16-0 HCAC.
