Manchester Men's Hoops Upsets Hanover; First Win Over HC Since ‘15

Manchester's win over Hanover on Saturday was its first over the Panthers since January 17, 2015.
The Spartans' defense shined bright for the full 40 minutes of action as the Panthers were limited to just 32.8 percent (19-58) shooting from the floor. MU also held the Panthers to just 3-21 (14.3 percent) shooting from beyond the 3-point arc. The Spartans' scrappy play also resulted in 32 points off 22 Hanover turnovers.
After Hanover started the game with a 3-pointer the Spartans immediately rattled off seven straight points.
With 4:47 remaining in the opening half, Hanover knocked in a jump shot that drew the visiting Panthers to within four, 22-18. Manchester ended the half on a 9-3 run that was capped by a buzzer-beating 30-footer from Jalen Owens that sent Stauffer-Wolfe Arena into a frenzy.
Manchester led 31-21 at the break.
In the second half, Manchester's defense once again stood tall as Hanover struggled to get clean looks at the basket.
Manchester made good use of the free throw line in the second half. After not attempting a free throw in the opening period, the Spartans went 12-17 at the free throw line, good enough for a 71% clip.
Three Spartans finished with 11 points apiece to lead the Black & Gold offense. Jalen Owens scored 11 points while adding five rebounds and four steals. Abdul Ogunnaike scored nine of 11 points in the second half, including a breakaway dunk that energized the crowd in Stauffer-Wolfe Arena. Ogunnaike added six boards and two steals. Matthew Westman scored all 11 of his points in the final 20 minutes. Westman made a pair of critical threes and knocked down five free throws.
Hanover College was paced by Ty Houston's 14 points.
The Spartans earned their first win over Hanover College in over five years on Wednesday. Manchester (7-12, 5-7 HCAC) will host Defiance College in Stauffer-Wolfe Arena on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
Hanover had its three-game winning streak snapped, falling for just the second time their last eight games.
Lady Spartans Drop Hard-Fought Battle
NORTH MANCHESTER – Sophomore forward Macy Miller poured in a career-best 24 points as Manchester University dropped a hard-fought HCAC battle to visiting Hanover College 80-64 on Saturday afternoon in Stauffer-Wolfe Arena.
Miller went 7-14 from the floor and made 10-11 foul shot attempts to lead the Black and Gold on Saturday. Miller added a team-high seven boards.
The Spartans went toe-to-toe with the Panthers for the first 20 minutes of Saturday's game. Manchester and HC were tied 16-16 after the conclusion of the first quarter.
Trailing 34-26 with 2:47 remaining in the second period, the Spartans ended the half on an 11-2 run. The run was highlighted by an old fashioned three-point play by Miller, a 3-pointer by Hannah Lindsey and a pair of free throws by Bridget Nash.
Manchester led by a point at the intermission 37-36.
Hanover turned up the pressure following the halftime break and the Panther defense was difficult to overcome. The visiting Panthers outscored the Black and Gold 44-27 in the third and fourth quarters.
The Spartans were held to 7-28 (25%) shooting following the intermission and went just 1-9 from 3-point territory over the final 20 minutes of action.
Hanover shot 19-35 (54.3 percent) in the third and fourth quarters and finished Saturday's game 33-61 from the floor.
Manchester (8-11, 5-7 HCAC) will travel to Defiance College on Wednesday.
Swimming Competes in Quad Match
NORTH MANCHESTER – The Manchester men's and women's swimming & diving teams competed at home this weekend at the Strauss-Peabody Aquatic Center. Teams among the competition were Olivet College, Urbana, and Anderson University.
On the women's side, Shelby Kell led the way for the Spartans, earning an event win in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:08.47. She also finished second in the 50-yard freestyle, posting a 26.60 time. Katie Blystone and Mackenzie Hoover finished second and fourth in the 100-yard backstroke with times of 1:09.66 and 1:11.29, respectively.
The women's 400 yard freestyle relay team posted a time of 4:07.05, good for a second-place finish. The relay team consisted of Kell, Hoover, Blystone, and Maria Wells.
The women topped Urbana 85-68 in the head-to-head scoring, marking the second head-to-head win of the season for women.
On the men's side, senior Christain Poole won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.01. He placed third in both the 50-yard breaststroke and the 100-yard butterfly, clocking times of 31.37 and 57.21.
The Spartans will be back in action on Feb. 13 for the HCAC Swimming & Diving Championships in Terre Haute, Ind. The meet is set to begin at 10 a.m. at the Vigo County Aquatics Center.
