Kick The ‘Board’om At Lake City Game Fest

Then get ready to spend hours or the whole day at Lake City Game Fest on Feb. 15 at Sacred Heart School, 135 N. Harrison St., Warsaw. This is the first time for the event.
Chimp’s Comix owner Nick Kelley said, “We are partnering with the Gen Con (Games) Library. Gen Con is one of the biggest board game conventions in the country, usually held every year down in Indianapolis. The Gen Con Games Library is affiliated with them, not a part of them but affiliated with them, enough to where they can use the name and logo.”
So what they do, he said, is the library will set up down at Gen Con and have a ticketed event in the auditorium. After people get their tickets, they go in, check out a board game to play while they’re there, return the game for another and play all day.
“Usually down there, they bring over 4,000 games. This being our first one and not knowing what to expect, they’re bringing over 750,” Kelley said. “If we can get a larger attendance of people pre-purchasing their tickets, but that’s going to be quick as the event is fast approaching, there’s a chance of possibly getting more games.”
If they learn this year they didn’t get enough games, next year’s event can be “ramped up,” he said. “We’re hoping to turn this into an annual thing.”
Gen Con Games Library’s games are more of the specialty board games, he said. Examples could be Catan, Ticket to Ride or Pandemic. “A lot more than non-big box store board games,” Kelley said.
Tickets are $10 per person or $40 for a family (two adults and up to six children under 18). Children under 16 are asked to be accompanied by an adult. The event is “come-and-go,” so if someone buys a ticket but then needs to leave for a little bit, they can return.
Tickets can be pre-purchased at tabletop.events, and a link is available through Chimp’s Comix’s Facebook page.
He suggested people try to carpool as much as possible.
“All the profits from the event will be getting donated to charities,” Kelley said.
Locally, that includes the Warsaw Community Meals, provided by the Knights of Columbus; and internationally, that is St. John Paul II, a school in Kenscoff, Haiti.
The first 250 people to attend get a free copy of Casual Game Insider magazine. Chimp’s Comix is also putting together a limited number of thank-you grab bags.
The ticket is the only purchase requirement, but there will be food and drink available for purchase.
Participants can play as many games as they want during the day – with friends or meet new people to play with.
On the side, Chimp’s Comix will have several events. Star Wars X-Wing will be taught from 5 to 8 p.m. The basics of Magic: The Gathering will be taught from noon to 7 p.m. Dungeons & Dragons demonstrations will be in two-hour blocks from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. DC Deck Builder will be taught from 4 to 8 p.m., while Hero Clix will be taught from 2 to 5 p.m.
Doors open at 8:30 a.m., and Kelley said another friend is bringing “too many games for me to mention all of them” when the doors open until 4 p.m.
The last game check-out of the event will be at 9:30 p.m.
During the day, there will be two Magic The Gathering tournaments. The Pioneer tournament will be at 10 a.m., with a Modern tournament at 3 p.m.
“As far as prizes or giveaways, we’ll be announcing that stuff later on our Facebook. There will be door prizes from the Gen Con Games Library, as well, and then us here at Chimp’s will be doing our own little prize pack on the side. To get a chance to win that, you have to play in one of our events to get a ticket to try and win that. Just to encourage people to try our events, learn a new game, maybe play a tournament and that will get them access to try and win the surprise items that we’ll be announcing later,” Kelley explained.
“Honestly, this is the first of its kind in Warsaw,” Kelley said.
