Mission Accomplished, and then some.
In a 67-16 win over the visiting Lady Warriors, Warsaw led 13-7 after the first eight-minute quarter and went on to simply dominate the final three quarters en route to the 51-point victory.
The Lady Tigers outscored Wawasee 26-2 in the second stanza, 15-3 in the third quarter and 13-4 in the final frame.
“We talked in the locker room, in the team room, before we came out. We said the first quarter might be a tight quarter, and we just need to maintain pressure and maintain intensity, and keep the pressure on them,” said Krebs, whose team shot 50 percent from the field compared to Wawasee’s 21 percent.
“And that’s what we did. In those middle two quarters (in which Warsaw outscored Wawasee 41-5) it wasn’t big adjustments that we made. When you start hitting some shots you make a head coach look good. Kacilyn hit a couple, Kensie hit a couple, and then all of a sudden the inside opens up.
“We knew today was gonna be one of those situations where we were gonna have to play almost backwards of our philosphy. Normally you wanna go inside-out, but today we had to flip that on its head because of how Wawasee was gonna play. I was proud of how we played with great intensity.”
Warsaw made seven treys in the win, with senior Kensie Ryman hitting three, and senior Kendall Wayne and junior Kacily Krebs two each.
The Lady Tigers also dominated Wawasee in the paint 34-8, scored 24 points off the Lady Warriors’ 27 turnovers, and outscored their guests 17-4 in second-chance points.
Warsaw outrebounded Wawasee 41-21, including an 18-6 advantage on the offensive glass.
Senior Audrey Grimm led Warsaw’s attack on the boards, pulling down 11 rebounds to complete her double-double that also included 10 points.
“Audrey probably doesn’t get enough credit for what she does on both ends of the floor,” said Krebs. “I swear there are times when she grows and extra two or three inches on her fingers and reaches for a ball. I don’t know how she gets her hand on the ball half the time.
“If you recall the pass that Kensie threw her, and she had to jump up, and it’s almost like she grabbed that thing one-handed. She’s just a phenominal athlete. She does all the little things that people sitting in the stands might not notice, but as a coach they’re extremely valuable … the defense that she plays, the getting her hands on the ball, the hustle plays, the rebounds.
“I thought we were gonna have a hard time replacing Brielle (Harrison after she graduated), an no offense to Brielle she was a great player in her own right, but Audrey has stepped up and done a great job filling that role, and she’s an amazing player for us.”
Ryman finished with 13 points for the Lady Tigers, while Krebs tallied 12. Junior Abby Sanner contributed nine points and seven boards, and Wayne ended the evening with eight points.
Senior Danielle Jenkins led Wawasee with eight points.
The Lady Warriors, who hadn’t played a game since beating Bethany Christian on Dec. 3, fell to 2-3 overall and 0-1 in the NLC. Wawasee is in action again Tuesday when it hosts league foe Concord.
Warsaw extended its win streak to five and improved to 9-2 overall and 2-0 in the NLC.
The Lady Tigers travel to Norwell Tuesday.
