LEBANON, Tenn. - Grace’s men’s basketball team let a first-half lead slip away at Cumberland on Monday during a 99-88 defeat.

The Lancers led for the first 31:19 of regulation, but Cumberland outscored Grace by 17 in the second half to win.

Grace wasted little time taking the lead on Monday. The Lancers scored the first six points of the contest thanks to buckets by Jake Wadding, Cade Gibbs and Matt Jennings.

Although the lead was never very large, the Lancers managed to hold the lead for the rest of the half.

Late in the half, Gibbs made back-to-back layups to give Grace an 11-point cushion, its largest lead of the half.

The Phoenix squeezed in two 3-pointers before the halftime ended, but Grace still remained in front 48-42 at the intermission.

Grace clung to a slight lead in the second half, but the Phoenix were not content to play from behind. Cumberland finally took its first lead of the contest at 69-67 on a 3-pointer with 8:41 remaining in regulation.

The Lancers were unable to slow the Phoenix’s momentum; Cumberland claimed an eight-point advantage with 2:24 on the clock.

A pair of late triples by Haden Deaton kept Grace in range, but it was not enough.

The Phoenix scored on 11 straight possessions in the final four minutes to prevent Grace from completing a comeback; the final five possessions were scored from the foul line as Cumberland iced the victory.

Overall, Grace was outscored 42-24 over the final 14 minutes of regulation.
