NORTH MANCHESTER — After a resounding 47-12 win over North Miami last Friday, the Manchester Squires wanted to carry that energy over into last night’s game against the Bluffton Tigers.

Bluffton senior quarterback Hayden Nern had other plans.

Coming off of a three-touchdown performance last week against Northfield, Nern would tack on two more scores to his 2020 campaign, as the Tigers blanked the Squires 22-0 Friday night in North Manchester.

“I’m extremely proud of our guys and the way that they competed,” said Manchester head football coach Alyx Brandewie. “We have got to clean a lot of things up, we have to got to keep working to get better every single day, and we have got to practice the right way. The scoreboard doesn’t look the way I would like it to, but I am proud of our guys and I love what we have got in our room right now.”

Bluffton (2-0) got on the scoreboard first, as senior running back Cody Mittlestedt capped off a three-play, 52 yard drive with a 17-yard run to put the Tigers up 7-0 early.

The Squires defense kept Bluffton out of the end zone for the second quarter and most of the third, but that was where Nern took over.

Despite being held scoreless, Manchester (1-1) had several standout moments.

Senior defensive lineman Collin Bonewitz recorded a fumble recovery, while junior defensive back Dominic Lincoln intercepted Nern in the second quarter. Senior Trescott Duffy and sophomore Jordan Ayres each recorded a sack, and junior Dylan Stroud blocked a field goal attempt.

Even with some success, coach Brandewie took some blame.

“I don’t necessarily think that I did a great job of putting our guys in a position to have success tonight,” said Brandewie. “I told them that I have got to be better. Across the board, we have got to be a little bit cleaner and a little bit more dialed-in, and that starts with me as the head coach.”

Bluffton begins conference play next week, as they will face rival South Adams. The Squires will travel on Friday to face off against county rival Wabash.

“We’ll let this one sink in overnight, then we will get back Saturday morning and clean up and fix what we have got to clean up and fix,” said Brandewie. “It’s a county game against Wabash, and coach Hanley does a nice job with that program over there. It’s really fun to compete against a staff that you respect, and a program that’s in the county where the kids know each other. But we have to got to work and grow from tonight first, then we will start attacking for Wabash Week on Monday.”
