LAGRANGE — Wawasee opened the 2020 football season in convincing fashion Friday, Aug. 21 at Lakeland.

The Warriors scored on four of five first-half possessions and beat the Lakers 42-0.

Wawasee quarterback Parker Young completed 10-of-15 passes for 220 yards and four touchdowns. He connected on 8-of-10 for 184 yards in the first half as the visitors built a 28-0 lead.

“One thing we did do well last year was get short yardage on third down and things like that,” said Warriors head coach Jon Reutebuch, who watched that trend continue Friday. “We have extreme confidence that we can get a yard or two if we need it.”

Wawasee’s defense made it hard on Lakeland all game along with its pressure.

Dominic Blair spent plenty of time in the Laker backfield during a contest in which the Warriors threw the hosts for negative yardage seven times.

(Blair) played a whale of a game tonight,” said Reutebuch. “He wasn’t one of the guys cramping. He probably could have played another quarter.

“He was pumped.”

The Warriors forced the Lakers to punt on the game’s opening drive. A illegal blocking penalty rubbed out what would have been a 70-yard return for a touchdown by Kameron Salazar.

Wawasee punted on its first offensive possession of the night then cashed in on the next four of the half.

Young hooked up with Salazar on a 65-yard pass play and closed out a eight-play drive with a 2-yard keeper  at 1:15 of the first quarter. Caleb Clevenger added his first of six extra points.

After another Laker punt (there were six of them on the night), Wawasee went on a 12-play march that culminated with a 7-yard TD pass from Young to Jacob Meek at the 6:54 mark of the second quarter.

The next time Lakeland had the ball, the Warriors stopped them on fourth down and three snaps later Young tossed a 35-yard scoring pass to Salazar at 3:51.

Wawasee forced the Lakers to punt again and used that opportunity to tally the first half’s fourth touchdown.

Young’s 24-yard scoring aerial to Meek with 59.1 left in the second period came on fourth down-and-9 and capped a six-play drive.

At the break, the Warriors had also rushed for 102 yards (41 by Young, 37 by Nathan Larson and 24 by Salazar) and held Lakeland to 20 net yards (13 on the ground).

Deion Marshall started at quarterback for the Lakers when two-year returning starter Colton Isaacs took ill during pregame warm-ups. He was held to 1-of-9 passing in the first half and 3-of-15 for the game. He was intercepted by Hayden Dement in the second half.

Wawasee scored on its second possession of the second half — a 33-yard TD pass from Young to Adam Beer at 6:26 of the third quarter.

The Warriors had the ball after a fourth-down stand at the Lakeland 26. The scoring drive took four plays.

There was 9:10 left in the contest when Wawasee tallied its last points.

Following Dement’s pick, the Warriors punted but Lucas Ringler pounced on the ball when the Lakers muffed the kick. Young ran three straight times for 8, 23 and 3 yards for the game’s sixth TD.

Using caution during the COVID-19 pandemic, Lakeland officials made sure that all spectators wore masks and observed social distancing.

West Noble visits Wawasee Friday, Aug. 28.
