Warsaw Speedway Hall Of Fame Inductees To Be Honored

By Kim Gregory Baney-

This week marks the 30-year anniversary of the closing of the Warsaw Speedway, so it seems only fitting to honor another group of drivers and support personnel that made such an impact to the local speedway, the fans, and the sport of racing.

Five season championships and numerous feature wins were won by this year’s recipients being inducted into the Warsaw Speedway Hall of Fame.  A total of 11 new members will be inducted into the Hall of Fame this Saturday night at Plymouth Speedway during intermission of the evening’s racing events.

Nine recipients are former drivers including 1966 Modified Track Champion, Les Bills, who raced from 1959-1971, stock car drivers Don Burkett (1969-72) and his son Gene Burkett (1983-88), Thames Goon (1977-87), John Higginbotham (1969-78), 1955 & 56 Modified Track Champion, Jimmy Hullinger (1954-61), 1961 Modified Track Champion, Ray Kenens, Sr. (1958-69), Late Model stand-out, Dewayne May (1981-90), and 1959 Modified Track Champion, Bob Staley (1953-65).

Two other honorees include race car photographer, Wayne Bryant, who spent years capturing history at the Warsaw track and many other speedways from 1958 to 1982, and Eugene Gregory, who spent nearly 40 years doing everything from being a car owner, track timing & scoring in the 1950's-60's, safety team & track ambulance in the 70’s, to maintaining the sound system.

This is the sixth class to be inducted into the Warsaw Speedway Hall of Fame since the honor started in 2014.  Besides being honored  Saturday, recipients will be presented a Hall of Fame plaque sponsored by R&B Car Company of Warsaw.  All Warsaw Speedway fans and former drivers are welcome to attend Plymouth Speedway’s Season Cham-pionships during “Warsaw Night” Saturday.  General admission is $13 for adults, $5 for kids 6-12, and free for kids 5 and under.

The speedway is at 11631 12th Road in Plymouth.
