Rochester Schools, Athletics Closed Until at least Aug. 24

ROCHESTER – Citing “recent activities of students attending end-of-summer celebrations, and a number of exposures to persons testing positive for COVID 19 there and during travels,” Rochester Community Schools officials announced that classes and all activities, including sports, will not begin “until a least August 24, 2020.”

“The school board, administrators and staff have worked hard to make in-class learning possible, but the actions of a few have prevented that for the 85% of students who planned to have in-class instruction.”

Rochester, a member of the Three Rivers Conference, is scheduled to open its football season Aug. 21 when the Zebras were to host Wabash in a TRC game. The Zebras’ Aug. 28 non-conference game at Knox may be in jeopardy, as the IHSAA normally requires 10 practices before entering inter-school competition.

As of press time there was no official word on whether athletic events will be rescheduled or cancelled.

Whitko’s football team is scheduled to travel to Rochester on Sept. 4, with the Zebras going to Manchester Sept. 11 and rival Tippecanoe Valley on Sept. 18. All three would be TRC?games.

Other home competitions scheduled for Rochester affecting Times-Union area teams include a girls golf match with Manchester and Triton Aug. 18 and Triton at Rochester boys tennis Aug. 20.
