Owner Mitch Miller said the Alcohol, Tobacco, Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) came out with a bulletin allowing companies with spirits permits to produce hand sanitizer.
The week after the bulletin came out on March 18, Streven Distilling Company started producing hand sanitizer, Miller said. Since then, the company has produced approximately 250 gallons of hand sanitizer.
Miller said there were a number of distilleries that were producing hand sanitizer before TTB put out its bulletin, but once the organization laxed requirements on spirits distilleries, Streven decided to start producing hand sanitizer because there was a demand for it. Currently, Streven is focusing on hand sanitizer production as it’s a smaller distiller and with the restaurant restrictions due to Gov. Holcomb’s stay-at-home order, spirits sales “has kind of dropped off.”
When they first started producing hand sanitizer, it was donated to organizations such as nonprofits, among other areas.
While Streven Distilling Company is still donating hand sanitizer, they have opened up to retail sales. Currently, there are three sizes that are available: 8 ounces for $5, 16 ounces for $9 and a gallon for $65, Miller said.
Miller stated Streven is currently working on its website, so the best way for people to find out what the company’s hours of operation are for distributing the hand sanitizer will be to check the company’s Facebook page as Streven Distilling Company is not open all day every day for distribution.
Customers are not restricted to Kosciusko County, though, as word has gotten out the company is doing this and people and companies from other areas of Indiana have bought hand sanitizer from them, including a roofing company in South Bend.
