MARION – Indiana Wesleyan junior and Warsaw Community High School alumni Kyle Mangas was named Saturday as one of 14 finalists for the Bevo Francis Award, given to the best small college basketball player in the nation.

This list consists of some of the top players from NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, NAIA Division I, NAIA Division II, USCAA, and NCCAA. 2020 marks the fifth year of the Bevo Francis Award.

Others on list include

• Chris Coffey, Georgetown;

• Zaccheus Darko-Kelly, Providence (MT)

• Jhonathan Dunn, Southern Nazarene

• Brett Hanson, Florida Southern

• Ryan Hawkins, Northwest Missouri State

• Trevor Hudgins. Northwest Missouri State

• Cam Martin, Missouri Southern

• Mark Matthews, Nova Southeastern

• Selom Mawugbe, Azusa Pacific

• Nic Reed, Olivet Nazarene

• Jake Ross. Springfield (MA)

• Andrew Sischo, Daemen

• Nate West, LeTourneau

The winner is scheduled to be announced tonight.

Mangas became IWU’s all-time leading scorer on Feb. 29, collecting his 2,453 point. The junior finished the season with 860 points and 2,479 career points. Mangas averaged six rebounds and four assists per game, both career-bests. On the season, Mangas collected 11 games with 30 or more points with five of them coming in a row. Nobody in the NAIA this season scored more than 30 points in four consecutive games.

The Wildcats won the Crossroads League regular and post-season tournament titles, and were at the NAIA Division II national tournament when it was cancelled last week. IWU won the title in 2018, Mangas’ freshman year.

The Clarence “Bevo” Francis Award is presented annually to the player who has had the finest overall season within Small College Basketball. Considerations will be season statistics and individual achievements, awards, personal character, and team achievements.

Warsaw Defeats NorthWood, Gets Share Of NLC Title
In what has become a rivalry between the two premier teams in the Northern Lakes Conference, the Warsaw and NorthWood volleyball teams met at the Tiger Den Thursday night for a game with major conference implications. The Lady Tigers were able to keep their perfect conference record alive, clinching at least a share of the NLC for the third straight year with a 3-0 win.

Warsaw, Wawasee Secure Spots In Sectional Finals
Three local teams made up the four spots at the IHSAA tennis sectional semifinals at Warsaw Thursday evening. With the Tigers taking on Whitko and the Northern Lakes Conference Champions Wawasee facing off against Columbia City for the two spots in Saturday’s final, there was plenty of action on the courts. In the end, the two NLC competitors were left standing after a 5-0 win for Warsaw and a 5-0 victory for the Warriors.

An Estimated 400-450 Attend Historical Walk At Oakwood Cemetery
Sexton Hal Heagy told the Oakwood Cemetery Board of Regents Thursday that there were an estimated 400 to 450 people that attended the A Walk Through Our Past historic walk on Sept. 14.

NORTH MANCHESTER – At Wednesday night's meeting, the North Manchester Town Council heard from Brenda DeVries of Bose, McKinney and Evans LLP of Indianapolis regarding a water bond ordinance that is the first step in securing funding for the town's upcoming water system improvement projects.
