Wes Hampton and Sherry Anne will perform starting at 8 p.m. Friday at Winona Heritage Room, 901 Park Ave., Winona Lake.
“It’s a very unique pairing,” said Wende Roberts, director/promotor for the Northern Lakes Gospel Promotions.
Hampton is the tenor in Gaither Vocal Band and has won numerous awards, including a Grammy in 2009 for his group’s album “Lovin’?Life,” according to a press release for the event.
“The Vocal Band is the premier band for Southern Gospel,” Roberts said.
Anne has had previous experience with performing with the Gaither Vocal Band, along with the Booth Brothers, who previously performed at Grace College, according to the release.
Anne’s “You Came” was a Singing News Songwriting Contest grand prize winner and charted in The Singing News and Billboard Magazine.
Anne has a testimony of how God has worked in her life and she shares it, Roberts said.
Roberts said she approached the two performers and asked if they would be interested in performing at Grace, which they were.
“They’ve not had a homecoming concert in years,” she said.
There’s several reasons why there was a pull to this area for the performers.
“It’s because we have that rich biblical history,” Roberts said, with Winona Lake having a connection to Billy Graham and Billy Sunday.
Graham was employed at one time at Youth for Christ, which was founded in Winona Lake. He also attended a prayer meeting in the former Westminster Hotel, which is now Westminster Hall at Grace College and Seminary.
Sunday was a famous evangelist. While spending their summers for a few years prior to 1911 in Winona Lake, Sunday moved his family permanently in 1911 to Winona Lake, where he had his headquarters. Sunday died Nov. 6, 1935, with his last sermon at First Methodist Church in Mishawaka.
There is a connection to Indiana for Hampton, as Gaither is from Alexandria.
“If people want to be encouraged and testified to, they should come on out,” Roberts said.
Roberts also said they had a surge in sales three weeks away from the concert.
Hampton and Anne will be joined by a local group during the concert.
No Name Quartet, a male singing group featuring Southern Gospel music from Winona Lake, will perform at the concert Friday. The group is made up of Tim Yocum, Bob Jackson, Jeff Secaur and Mike Yocum.
Tickets are available at www.grace.edu/alumni/homecoming/.
Artist circle tickets are $25 and general admission tickets are $15. People can walk up and buy tickets at the Heritage Room; however, tickets prices on walk-up will be $5 more.
