NORTH MANCHESTER – The Manchester University women's soccer team is giving back to the North Manchester community, one book at a time.

Spartan senior and team captain Katie Green spearheaded a book drive last month to benefit not only the North Manchester Public Library, but to also show young kids the importance of reading.

When asked what gave her the inspiration to organize the drive, Green, an elementary education major, stated, "I am an advocate of public education. I think all kids deserve a fair education and I want them to be able to get ahold of books."

The team collected donations at the Manchester-Alma football game on September 14 and the men's and women's soccer doubleheader on Sept. 28. To say that the book drive was successful would be an understatement – in total, 640 books were collected for the library.

"As a senior leader, this was a way for me to get my team involved in something bigger than ourselves," Green said. "I wanted our team to use our platform as student-athletes to showcase the value and importance of education and reading."

Any new books that were donated during the book drive will be put straight on the shelves at the North Manchester Public Library. Any used books that were collected will go to the Friends of The Library group that holds a pair of annual book sales. Revenue from the book sales will help fund programming at the NMPL.

Green and her teammates are scheduled to visit the North Manchester Public Library for a book reading on October 29.

With Green's time at Manchester University coming to a close, the senior midfielder is excited about her journey moving forward. "I will be will be student teaching this spring Pierceton Elementary School. My goal is to become an elementary school teacher, teaching either 3rd or 4th graders. Eventually, I want to attend grad school to become an administrator so I can continue to make more of a difference."
