ANDERSON – The Manchester Spartans blew past the rival Anderson University Ravens on Wednesday night. MU tallied a season high six goals en route to a 6-1 victory and moved to 2-0 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference action.

The Spartans scored a pair of early goals and never looked back on Wednesday afternoon.

Josh Gonzalez scored his team-leading eighth goal of the season in the ninth minute.  Max Baker was credited with an assist on Gonzalez's goal.

Baker then tallied the second score for Manchester University in the 16th minute.  Drew Gavit  and Justin Winterboer  picked up assists on the Baker goal.

Manchester remained ahead 2-0 at the intermission.  Through 45 minutes of play the Spartans held a narrow 11-9 advantage in shots.

Manchester blew the game wide open early in the second half, scoring a trio of within a seven minute span.

Nick Surber scored in the 52nd minute to put the Spartans ahead 3-0.  Nash Walkerand Alex Baker collected their first assists of the night.

Ruben Gonzalez scored just over 60 seconds later to push the Spartans' lead to 4-0.

Keegan Wondergem scored his first goal for the Black and Gold in the 59th minute to cap the quick flurry by Manchester.

MU's final goal came in the 90th minute, courtesy of Grey Kieffer.

For the match, Manchester University outshot Anderson 34-23 and totaled 10 assists.  Justin Winterboer made five saves in goal and earned his fourth win of the season.

Manchester notched its second consecutive win and won for the third time in four games.  The Spartans now sit at 5-6-1, 2-0 HCAC this fall.  Anderson fell to 3-8-1, 0-2 HCAC on the season.

Manchester will hit the road this weekend and will travel to Transylvania University.  The Spartans and Pioneers will clash on Saturday.  Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.



Slow Start Costs Spartan Volleyball

NORTH MANCHESTER – The Manchester University volleyball was unable to overcome a fast start from the Defiance College Yellow Jackets on Wednesday..  The visiting Yellow Jackets defeated the Spartans by set scores of 25-19, 25-17, and 25-22 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Confer-ence play in Stauffer-Wolfe Arena.

 The Yellow Jackets got out to an early 11-6 lead in the first set and led by as much eight as Defiance took the first set by a 25-19 tally.  DC built another big lead in the second set, jumping out to a 9-1 advantage.  The Spartans got no closer than seven points, dropping the second set 25-17.

 Both teams battled in the third set as the visiting Yellow Jackets narrowly edged Manchester 25-22.

Halle Planck led the Spartans with 11 kills. Alexandria Collins posted a team-high 21 assists.

Senior libero Anna Marie Lawrie ended the evening with a match-high 25 digs.

 Manchester dropped to 7-11, 0-3 HCAC while the Yellow Jackets improved to 13-7, 1-1 HCAC.  

Manchester will travel to Ancilla Community College for a tri-match on Friday.  The Spartans will take on the Ancilla Chargers and the South Suburban College Bulldogs beginning at 3 p.m.
