NORTH MANCHESTER – The Manchester men’s soccer team began Heartland Collegiate Athletic Confer-ence play with an emphatic 1-0 upset of Hanover College at Good Field on Saturday.

The visiting Panthers were selected second in the HCAC Preseason Poll; Manchester was picked fourth in the preseason poll.

A defensive and physical battle throughout the game, both teams combined for just 14 shots, with Hanover holding a narrow 9-5 advantage in the stat category.

The Spartans made the most of their offensive opportunities and grabbed the lead late in the second half.  Drew Gavit scored off an assist  from freshman Ruben Gonzalez for the match winner.

Justin Winterboer made two saves in goal and won his third decision in between the posts.

The Spartans improved to 4-6-1, 1-0 HCAC this season.  Hanover dropped to 3-5-1, 0-1 HCAC.  MU will head to rival Anderson on Wednesday for a 3 p.m. conference matchup.



Volleyball Splits A Pair

NORTH MANCHESTER – The Manchester Spartan volleyball team hosted Rose-Hulman and Eureka College in tri-match action in Stauffer-Wolfe Arena on Saturday. The Spartans split their two matches on the day.

Rose-Hulman def. Manchester

25-23, 25-15, 25-20


The visiting Fightin’ Engineers picked up a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference victory against the Spartans in the first match of the day in Stauffer-Wolfe Arena.

The Spartans were led by Kara Heckmuller’s 12 kills.  Halle Planck  added 10 kills against RHIT. Planck also had three solo blocks.

Alexandria Collins had a match-high 16 assists. Senior libero Anna Marie Lawrie  finished with 13 digs and four aces.

Katie Orbeta led Rose-Hulman with 11 kills and 15 assists.

Manchester wore down the Eureka College Red Devils, who took Rose-Hulman to five sets in their previous match, in the final match of the day on Saturday.

The Spartans hit .222 as a team, compared to a -.074 hitting percentage for the visiting Red Devils.  Halle Planck, Kara Heckmuller, and Rachel Ressler each had eight kills against EC. Heckmuller added 10 digs and three aces.  Kaprecia Larks  finished with four kills and a block assist.

Lauren Gandhi tallied a match-high 21 assists and finished with three aces.  Alexandria Collins chipped in 15 assists.

Anna Marie Lawrie led MU with 16 digs against Eureka and also had three service aces.

Manchester moved to 7-10, 0-2 HCAC on the season.  The Spartans will be back in action at 7 p.m. Wednesday, hosting Defiance College in Stauffer-Wolfe Arena.
