TERRE HAUTE – The Manchester University men's and women’s cross country teams captured the 2019 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Men's Cross Country titles on Sunday at the LaVern Gibson National Course.

The men earned their first conference title since 2016, while the Lady Spartans earned its fourth title in five years.

Manchester’s men beat out Rose-Hulman in a highly competitive race, as just three points separated the Spartans and Engineers.

Junior Lucas Fontanez captured the individual title  with a time of 26:41, nearly 10 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher.

Senior Sam Barnard placed sixth overall with a time of 27:06. Freshman Enrique Salazar finished in 10th place with a time of 27:21.

Senior Daniel Baker registered a top-15 finish, finishing in 13th in 27:24. Cameron Walton placed 16th in 27:45.

Fontanez, Barnard, and Salazar all earned All-HCAC honors. Fontanez was the  MVP while Salazar was named Freshman of the Year. Both Baker and Walton were honorable mention.



Women’s Race

The Lady Spartans led the field with 27 points. Hanover College placed second with 45 points.

Senior Hannah Wappes ran away with the individual title on Sunday, with a time of 22:50, 23 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher.

Junior Ana Acevedo placed third overall in  24:00.

Manchester added three more top 10 finishes as Emily Ewen placed fifth with a time of 24:21, Manchester High School alum Emily Lynn finished eighth with a time 24:48, and Sydney Young placed 10th with a time of 24:54.

All five Spartans garnered All-HCAC honors for their performances on Sunday, with Wappes earning MVP honors. Sophomore Dinah Gilbert was honorable mention after she placed 18th in 25:47.

Leading the Spartans men to thier seventh conference crown and the Lady Spartans to their eighth title, Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Brian Cashdollar was named the Coach of the Year for both teams.
