LEXINGTON, Ky. – The host Transylvania University Pioneers outlasted the visiting Manchester Spartans in a high-scoring Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference matchup in the Clive M. Beck Center on Saturday. TU won the shootout by a final score of 99-81.

Manchester University controlled the game in the first half and led by as much as nine on two separate occasions. A three-pointer by Keiton Hall with 2:33 left to play in the opening half put the Spartans ahead 42-33. The host Pioneers ended the half on a 10-2 run to trim MU’s advantage to just one, 44-43 heading into halftime.

Both teams remained close through the first 10 minutes of play in the second half. Leading by four at the 9:44 mark, the Pioneers ended the game on a 28-14 run.

In the second half alone, both Manchester and Transylvania combined to make 35 field goals and 12 three-pointers.

For the game, Manchester shot 27-of-59 (45.8%) from the floor and 10-of-26 (38.5%) from beyond the arc. The Spartans converted 17-of-22 of their free throw attempts, good for 77.3%.

Jalen Owens led the Spartans with a career-high 23 points. Owens finished 6-of-12 from the floor and made three three-pointers. DeMoines Whitney chipped in 12 points. CJ Hampton added 11 points and seven rebounds. Cortiz Buckner scored 10 points and dished out six assists.

Transylvania’s offense was difficult to stop once it got going on Saturday as the Pioneers shot 56.5% (39-of-69) from the field and made 14 three-pointers. Five Pioneers scored in double figures. Spencer McKinney scored 22 points off the bench after making six threes.

The Pioneers improved to 5-2, 2-1 HCAC with the win.  The Spartans (3-5, 1-2 HCAC) will take on Capital at 6 p.m. tonight in Stauffer-Wolfe Arena.



Manchester Women's Basketball Fall at No. 16 Transylvania

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Manchester University women’s basketball team fell in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference action at nationally ranked Transylvania University on Saturday afternoon.  The No. 16 Pioneers defeated the Spartans by a final score of 74-48.

Senior wing Nicole Weaver led the Spartans with 14 points. Weaver made four three-pointers.  Miranda Bieghler scored in double figures for the fourth straight game, finishing Saturday’s game with 12 points in 21 minutes off the bench.

The Pioneers’ defense limited Manchester to 32.7% shooting (17-of-52) for the game.  MU was also held to 30.8% shooting (8-of-26) from downtown.

Shelby Boyle led TU with 17 points. Three Pioneers scored in double figures for Transylvania.  As a team, Transy finished 33-of-77 from the field on Saturday afternoon, good enough for a 42.9% clip.

MU’s defense held the Pioneers to just 2-of-24 shooting from three-point territory.

Manchester dropped to 3-4, 0-2 HCAC on the young season.  MU will play its third consecutive conference game away from home Wednesday when the team travels to Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.  Game time against the Fightin’ Engineers is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.



Wrestling Falls to Ohio Northern

NORTH MANCHESTER – The visiting Ohio Northern Polar Bears topped the Manchester University Spartans by a final tally of 43-6 on Saturday afternoon in Stauffer-Wolfe Arena.

Joel Arney earned a victory at 157-pounds, winning by an 8-4 decision over Schuyler Caprella.

Tyler Leonhard won his 165-pound matchup against AJ  

Manchester will return to action next Saturday, December 21, in Nashville, Tennessee.  The Spartans will participate in the Gator Boot Duals.
