Lancers Men’s Soccer Impresses In Season Debut

In a game that featured long spells of possession, the Lancers had the upper hand on threatening chances from start to finish.
Grace had 13 shots and eight on goal compared to seven shots and five on goal for the Warriors (0-1).
The Lancers (1-0) scored in a variety of ways. Grace showcased a wealth of new talent under first-year head coach Arron Patrick to begin the Patrick Era with a win.
The first goal of the season for Grace came after just 15 minutes of play. Henrique Cerruti took a free kick and lofted a pass into the center of the penalty box. Ivan Santagiuliana connected with the pass and headed his shot inside the right post at the 15:30 mark.
Grace’s second goal was struck with a lethal dose of speed. The Lancers rapidly changed sides of the field and found Marcelo Talamas in the center circle. Talamas led Ulisses Miranda into space heading toward the penalty box, and Miranda slotted a pass to a wide-open Ze Maria Goncalves. The freshman blasted in his goal just below the crossbar in the 29th minute.
The match entered halftime with Grace ahead 2-0. Rochester rarely threatened and was outshot 9-2 before halftime.
The Lancers were patient in the second half and preferred to build an attack through possession.
The third and final goal of the match was a moment of brilliance of Miranda. Rochester made a seemingly safe pass back to its goalkeeper in the 73rd minute, but Miranda bolted into the empty space and intercepted the ball.
Miranda then rounded the goalkeeper on the dribble and passed the ball into the empty net for the final 3-0 scoreline.
Colton Wottring picked up the win in goal for Grace, making three saves while playing the first 78 minutes. Gonzalo Salo, in his first appearance for the Lancers, finished the game in goal and made a save.
Goncalves shot four times with two on goal to lead Grace, and Santagiuliana and Talamas each shot twice.
The Lancers remain at home on Thursday with a high-profile match. Grace hosts No. 12 Georgia Gwinnett at 7 p.m. on Thursday.
