Artists manipulate objects to create a different perspective in which to view the world around us. Sculpture in particular uses engineering solutions for a visual statement.

Elizabeth Wamsley, local award-winning clay artist, is leading a discussion and showing a short documentary, “Science and Art” at 6 p.m. Monday. Everyone is invited to this free event.

Field Trip To Grand Rapids, Mich.

Those taking the bus to the Meijer Sculpture Garden and ArtPrize Sept. 22 will be given maps about Saturday’s events.

If you haven't Geocached Grand Rapids you can ride up on the bus trip. We have a 50-passenger bus reserved to spend three hours at Meijer Gardens and then another three downtown.

This is the first weekend of ArtPrize so there is a lot to do. Tickets are $35 and include entry to the sculpture park. People interested in a ticket should see Becky Brower at the library.

Programs Coming Up

Programs at the Syracuse Library are free and for the most part feature drop-in activities.

Harry Potter craft club for teens is the exception. Registration is required to make the limited number of Harry Potter-themed crafts at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Storytime

Story times have started up with STEM activities for older preschoolers on Mondays at 10:30 a.m. Babies and toddlers are scheduled to have some farm fun on Wednesdays at 10:30 p.m.

School children can relax and do arts, crafts and games at the weekly Fun at Four on Thursdays.

Exercise

An additional chair yoga group has been added to the weekly activities. A slower more problem focused class meets at the Syracuse Community Center on Thursdays at 10:30 a.m. The half hour is ideal for people that struggle with balance or restricted movement.

“Walk on the Trails,” followed by advanced chair yoga, continues to welcome new people on Thursday mornings at 9 and 9:30 a.m. Pyramid easy Chair yoga offers basic yoga poses using a chair on Tuesdays at 10:15 a.m.

Libraries Work Together

The staff of the Syracuse Library will be at a training event on Sept. 21 and the library will be closed.

The training event is bringing staff from libraries in northwest Indiana to the Oakwood Event Center for a day of speakers and presenters. The day-long conference is an opportunity for the people from area libraries to interface for professional development and to visit other areas.
