Middle School Show Benefits Local Shelter

Show time is 7 p.m., with doors opening at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students and children 10 and under.
The first one-act play is “The Eight Ways to Survive the Zombie Apocalypse,” and the second one is “The Day the Internet Died.”
About 20 seventh- and eighth-graders are taking part in the two comedic plays.
“This is whoever auditioned and wanted a part, got a part,” said director Grace McDillon.
McDillon said one student is doing props and stage crew, though there aren’t a lot of props and it’s a very simple show. Another student is running makeup behind the scenes, and teacher Justin Weaver and some students are making some specialty props.
She said the purpose of the evening is twofold. One is to relaunch the theater program at Lakeview, which has been absent from the school for a few years.

“I was here three years ago for two years. My first two years of teaching I was here. Then I was gone for two years in Taiwan, I was teaching language arts but I also was running their theater program at the school I was teaching in, but now I’m back,” McDillon said. “Now that I’m back, I thought we should get this going again.”
She said students are enthusiastic about the theater program’s return.
“After the auditions, I had probably 10 other kids come up afterward and say, ‘We missed the audition,’ or ‘We are so sad we didn’t try, we want to try now.’ They couldn’t join, obviously, but there’s been good interest,” she said.
The second purpose is to support Fellowship Missions, the homeless shelter at 1520 E. Winona Ave., Warsaw. Information about it can be found on its website at fellowshipmissions.net.
“It’s going for a good cause, and it’s supporting theater. It’s helping middle schoolers build confidence and public speaking skills,” she said.
