DWD Awards $1.5 M In Grants For Regional Workforce Issues
INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Department of Workforce Development awarded the Northern Indiana Workforce Development Board a $125,000 performance grant to help address critical workforce issues in the region.
It plans to use the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act grant to support and expand the Ex-Offenders to Work program and the Hoosier Initiative For Re-Entry program. The programs connect offenders prior to and after release with employment opportunities.
“The Northern Indiana Workforce Development Board is very pleased to receive a workforce performance support grant from the Governor to allow us to expand our ‘Ex-Offenders to Work’ program in the region,” said Greg Vollmer, president and CEO of the board. “Together, with WorkOne, Grace Community Education, and our Adult Education and Correctional Services partners, we will be able to provide participants workforce-readiness training, work-based learning opportunities and certifications prior to their release from incarceration. This improves employment rates, reduces the overall cost to the community and the rate of recidivism.”
The board oversees workforce initiatives in Elkhart, Fulton, Marshall, Kosciusko and St. Joseph counties.
DWD provided grant opportunities to all 12 Workforce Development Boards throughout the state. Each proposal had to focus on improving the workforce operations of that region in alignment with Gov. Eric Holcomb’s and the department’s objectives.
“We wanted to invest this money in local communities to address each of their unique challenges,” DWD Commissioner Fred Payne said. “It’s an important tool in helping more Hoosiers enter the workforce.”
In total, $1.5 million in grant money was distributed across the state by DWD to the region’s workforce development boards through this grant opportunity.
