Guest speakers have led discussions that have focused on gothic literature and the connections to science. A popular event was an evening where local people read original and Frankenstein-inspired stories. The last “One State/One Story: Frankenstein” is a repeat of the open mic evening that this time looks at stories about outsiders.
“FrankenHowl 2” is a chance for writers to share 3-to-5-minute selections at 7 p.m. Nov. 9. The front doors of the library open 15 minutes early for seating in the upper lounge area. Plenty of seating is available for audience members. Several authors and the Friends used books will be offered for sale.
Geocaching Event
The prevalence of phones with apps and internet connection has made scavenger hunting much easier to coordinate while using GPS. Geocaching, the worldwide activity that uses GPS and a tracking site, is more popular than ever.
The final entries in the annual Geocaching short film contest are being shown at noon Nov. 10. The hour of fun clips is a good way to meet local people and see stories from around the world.
Wellness for Children
The Syracuse Library is hosting the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile, so that, it is convenient to bring children through age 5 for a doctor visit.
From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, drop-in appointments are available at the mobile clinic. The library will provide cocoa and a comfortable place to wait for services. Toddlers are welcome to come to the morning’s stories for toddlers from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.
Other children’s programs are STEM activities on Monday at 10:30 a.m. and baby time on Friday at 10:30 a.m. “Fun at After School” meets at 4 p.m. Nov. 8. After school activities keep kids away from excessive computer time.
Other Happenings
The week begins on Monday when the Turkey Creek Readers book club talks about the famous banned book “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian.” The hour meeting is at 4:30 p.m. Monday. Much of the discussion is not dependent upon reading the book, so guests are welcome.
The Decluttering Support Group meets at 1 p.m. Tuesday.
The coming holidays can be stressful because of dealing with giving and acquiring things. WorkOne is bringing expert and inside knowledge related to employment questions on Wednesday from 1 to 3:30 p.m.
Teens gaming night get-together is having a monthly meeting from 5 to 7 p.m. Nov. 8. Participants challenge each other on the big screen.
