The Syracuse Library and the Syracuse Wawasee Historical Museum are hosts for two presentations by Jeannie Regan-Dinius on Tuesday. Regan-Dinius is an expert on the cemeteries in Indiana, having done surveys of all the cemeteries as part of her job with the Historic Preservation Division of the Department of Natural Resources.
Her first presentation is about symbolism in the cemeteries of Indiana at 1 p.m. at the Syracuse Public Library. The second presentation on the Underground Railroad in Indiana is at 6 p.m. at the historical museum in the Community Center.
The term “Underground Railroad” brings visions of hidden passages and furtive activities in the dark of night, but the term underground comes from the status of aiding slaves out of slavery when it was an illegal activity. There is documentation that Indiana was an active web of routes on the road to freedom before emancipation freed black slaves in 1863 and Regan-Dinius will show how research reveals some of this history.
A map of historic buildings on Main Street Syracuse and key features in the Syracuse Cemetery will be available for self-guided tours beginning Thursday May 3rd. Docents will lead groups from the library following the cemetery presentation on May 8th. No registration is required to attend these free events.
May n Full Swing
Frankenstein will launch more discussions in May. “Young Frankenstein,” a movie by Mel Brooks and starring Gene Wilder, is considered to be one of the more accurate movie depictions of Mary Shelley’s book.
Compare the book to the movie with the discussion, “Creation,” led by Becky Miller at 6 p.m. May 22. Shelley was writing in the format of Gothic Romance Horror. Find out what makes the genre so compelling and lasting, with a presentation led by Dawn Burns at 6 p.m. May 29.
Chair Yoga is back. The summer schedule for easy chair yoga, called pyramid yoga, is to meet at 10:15 a.m. Tuesdays. Poses and moves are shown with both an easy version and a more challenging version.
Thursday’s advanced chair yoga meets at 9:30 a.m. to do a wider variety of yoga poses than the easy class. The Syracuse-Wawasee Trails director is coming to the library for a walk that connects the Trail to the town on Thursdays at 9 a.m.
WorkOne continues providing services in the northern part of the county by coming to the Syracuse Library every Wednesday from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Other monthly events are a Mother’s Day craft and Anime and video-gaming for teens. The dates for a Frankenstein inspired after-hours movie is at 6 p.m. May 11.
The writer’s workshop meets at 11 a.m. May 12.
