Comedy Films Come In Many Different Sub-Genres

My husband and I had the opportunity to watch the sequel to one of our favorite slapstick comedy films,  “Daddy’s Home.” We were not disappointed in “Daddy’s Home 2.”

The film is a continuation of co-dad parenting between biological dad Mark Walhberg and stepdad Will Ferrell. While blended family life is rarely easy, these two fathers seem to have it worked out, except when Mel Gibson and John Lithgow, who are the dads’ fathers, come to visit for the Christmas holiday. Things seem to go awry very quickly.

This is the third film that Walhberg and Ferrell have teamed up together with the first being “The Other Guys”. The Warsaw Community Public Library has over 1300 comedy films in the collection. Below are a few that might be of interest.

A “black” or “dark” comedy is a film that makes light of a subject matter that is serious or painful. “Heathers,” “The Big Lebowski,” “A Serious Man,” “Mayhem” and “Burn After Reading” are all excellent films in this comedy sub-genre.

Slapstick comedy is a film that involves exaggerated physical activity that exceeds the boundaries of the norm.

“Dumb and Dumber,” “Home Alone,” “The Jerk,” “There’s something about Mary,” and “Super Troopers” are all examples of slapstick humor.

A parody or spoof comedy is a film that parodies or imitates other film genres. “Monty Python and the Holy Grail,” “Shaun of the Dead,” “Airplane,” “O Brother, Where Art Thou?,” and “Tropic Thunder” are entertaining movies.

There is also a comedy horror genre for those who like a little gore and fear with their comedy. “Rocky Horror Picture Show,” “Gremlins,” “Zombieland,” “Sharknado,” and “An American Werewolf in London,” are just as funny as they are scary.

The most popular comedy films are the romantic comedy. Most women find this genre charming. If you wish to score points with your significant other “Bridget Jones Diary,” “When Harry Met Sally,” “Clueless,” “Silver Linings Playbooks,” “10 Things I Hate About You,” “My Big Fat Greek Wedding,” and “Say Anything” might be a great date night film.

The comedy genre list would not be complete without the action sub-genre. “Deadpool,” “Spy,” “Central Intelligence,” “The Other Guys,” “48 hrs.,” “21 Jump Street,” “Beverly Hills Cop,” and “Kick-Ass” are action packed with laughs, explosions and danger.
