Library Needs House Moved

By Staff Report-

SOUTH WHITLEY – A historic American Four-Square house in South Whitley is available to anyone willing to pay for the cost of moving it.

Earlier this year, the South Whitley Community Public Library received a generous donation from a private citizen to be used for a proposed expansion project. Using a portion of that gift, the library purchased the house at 102 S. Maple St. in anticipation of the project.

In considering several options regarding the use of the house, the SWCPL Board of Directors consulted with a construction firm with an eye toward renovating the existing structure for library purposes.   Estimates for the library to bring the house up to the standards required for compliance with ADA and commercial use laws were determined to be economically unfeasible.

However, a private homeowner has a different standard, and can complete any changes or upgrades at a pace comfortable to the owner. Recognizing that, the SWCPL board is offering the house to anyone who wants to pay to have it moved to their location in a timely manner.

The two-story wood frame house was built in 1908. The house is nearly 2,400 square feet with four bedrooms, one and a half baths and an open-frame porch. The detached garage and utility shed will remain on the existing property.

Anyone interested in this house, should contact a library board member within the next 30 days. A list of board members can be found at www. swcplib.com.
