Young Readers Inspire Reading List For End Of Summer
July 18, 2018 at 7:54 p.m.
Summer Reading has been going strong. Hundreds of children have visited the library to celebrate their reading and learning achievements. Inspired by these young readers, we offer staff picks of recent children’s literature with a fresh take on fairy tales and fantasy fiction.
Amy recommends “Wolf in the Snow” by Matthew Cordell, the 2018 winner of the Caldecott Medal for most distinguished American picture book for children. With bold ink and watercolor pictures, this nearly wordless book tells the story of a girl and a wolf cub who each get lost and rescue one another. Readers may notice the little girl’s hooded red coat and make connections to a famous fairy tale.
Both Amy and I are eager to draw attention to a new picture book written by Minh Le and illustrated by Dan Santat. In “Drawn Together,” a boy bonds with his grandfather across the different languages and cultures that separate them. The two characters express themselves through stunning artwork that blends American superhero culture and Thai folklore.

For a good chapter book Duane recommends “Grump: the Fairly True Tale of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves,” the latest fractured fairy tale by Liesl Shurtliff. How would Snow White’s story look from the grumpy dwarf’s perspective? Why is he so grumpy anyway? “Grump” is sure to delight readers who seek a hilarious adventure with lots of twists.
Stephanie is excited to share “Belle Takes Flight” with readers who enjoy fairy tales and Disney magic. This new novel by Kathy McCullough continues the story of Disney's “Beauty and the Beast.”
The spell is broken, but the prince is in trouble again, and Belle and her friends must rescue him.
Fairy tale fans also do not want to miss these two free events happening at the library next week. Monday at 2 or 6 p.m., check out the Stevens Puppets production of “Beauty and the Beast.”
July 25 from 4 to 6:30 p.m., join us for a fairy-tale themed makerspace and Disney movie sing-along.
There is still time to celebrate your summer reading achievements at the library. July 31 is the last day to log your reading activity and pick up prizes.
For more children’s reading suggestions or event information, visit us in the children’s area of the library, call 574-267-6011, or email [email protected].
Friends Of The Library Book Sale
Avid readers can look forward to restocking their bookshelves this month by taking advantage of two book sales sponsored by Friends of the Warsaw Community Public Library. There will be a mini book sale held in the library lobby 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday. Shoppers will find a good selection of Westerns, romance, classics, general fiction and non-fiction, business/management and children’s books. A bag sale is being offered for $5.50 (no discount).
In keeping with the WCPL theme for the month, the "Libraries Rock” mid-size book sale on Tuesday will also offer crafts and sweet treats in a cafe setting. Plan a fun afternoon, anytime from noon to 7:30 p.m., in meeting room A/B at the library.
Friends of the Warsaw Library will be having the next monthly meeting at 1 p.m. Aug. 6, in meeting room A/B.
