The Panther, T’Challa, is the king of a fictional African country called Wakanda. Wakanda is technologically advanced but pretends to be primitive. The film revolves around a domestic power struggle for the throne. The Panther’s rival wants to use the country's technology to rule the world.
With its deep connection to African culture, well-paced action, beautiful scenery, and powerful performances from everyone involved, it is a film to see even if you are not a superhero movie fan
Despite having a smaller target audience, it is the third highest-grossing film ever in the United States.
I’m not naturally a fan of superhero films, but “Black Panther” has become one of my favorites.
Most superhero films have a villain. This film is no different. Even though the villain, played by Michael B Jordan, was the usual two-dimensional “bad guy” he was able to sell it. Chadwick Boseman does a superb job as the Black Panther.
For a Marvel film, it is inspirational. The biggest take-home message that “Black Panther” brings is political. It encourages worldwide collaboration, advocates racial harmony, redefines gender roles and interweaves fantasy and current social issues with an incredible balance. Anyone can be a hero, if they choose to be. Our world needs more heroes.
The Warsaw Community Public Library has many superhero films to choose. Below are some that are worth a watch.
Many films are based on Marvel Comics and Stan Lee’s creations. “Deadpool,” “Doctor Strange,” “Thor,” “X-Men” and “Guardians of the Galaxy” are outstanding choices and most have sequels in the franchise.
If you prefer DC Comics then you might be interested in “The Dark Knight,” “The Green Lantern,” “Superman,” “Suicide Squad” and Wonder Woman.” Most of these also have sequels.
Animated superhero films that are suitable for a family film night are “The Incredibles,” “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” and “Big Hero 6.”
Sometimes superhero films are parodied and are meant to poke fun at the genre. “Mystery Men,” “Superhero Movie,” “Defendor” and “The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lava- girl in 3-D” are all fun choices.
Some superhero films don’t fall into a particular category but are still enjoyable to watch. “Unbreakable,” “Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow,” “Sky High,” “Hellboy,” “Watchmen” and “Blade” are films that are brilliant selections when you’re looking for something other than typical.
Come see what WCPL has to offer.
