Indiana’s Economic Outlook Among Top 3 In Latest State Rankings
A national report that measures 15 variables to rank the economic outlook of all U.S. states, has just placed Indiana near the top, at No. 3.
The Rich States, Poor States report released by the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), determines economic outlook by evaluating taxes, labor costs, state debt, workers’ compensation costs, and more.
The state director of the National Federation of Independent Businesses says the ranking bodes well for Hoosier businesses and residents, as well as the future of the state’s economy.
“We are grateful to state policymakers that Indiana is a Right to Work state, businesses pay close to the lowest workers’ compensation costs, and labor costs have remained in check,” said state director Barbara Underwood. “Optimism among small-business owners is at a record high, and many of those companies have plans to expand and hire more employees.”
Indiana’s economic performance was not as encouraging, ranking No. 30. That figure is based on the state’s gross domestic product, the number of taxpayers leaving the state, and employment growth. But an economist with ALEC, which issued the economic report, said Indiana has made major improvements and is much more business-friendly, which will result in expansion and growth.
“Back in 2012 Indiana was ranked 24th in this economic report, and now we are in the top 3,” said Underwood. “With a good business climate at the state level and additional benefits from federal tax reform, we are likely to see a surge in growth in Indiana, lower unemployment, and rising wages.”
