Lady Spartan Softball Falls
By Mark Adkins-
Continuing an afternoon and early evening when her batting average soared 100 points the junior came back in the nightcap to go two-for-two with a run scored as part of a close-knit 6-3 loss.
Her plate crossing was part of a three-run sixth inning rally for the Spartans. Freshman infielder/designated player Makenzi Nyland laced a two-run double over the head of TU’s left fielder, powering the home attack that trimmed a once 6-0 deficit in half. Coach Josh Dzurick’s crew kept the home crowd on its feet even longer, as senior outfielder Emilee Liston reached on an error to bring the tying run to the plate.
Taylor hurler Courtney Moriarty kept the Black and Gold (0-5-1) at bay from that point, firing a strikeout to end the frame. Relief pitcher Maddie Cornell closed out the visiting sweep, striking out two in Manchester University’s final at-bat.
The Spartans continue their non-conference schedule Sunday, traveling to Centre College of Danville, Ky., for a 1 p.m. first pitch.
NOTES: Sophomore third baseman Kate Skeens upped her personal hit streak to four games with singles in each contest including a run-scoring safety in the second contest … Junior pitcher Madisyn Walter saw her earned run average drop below 2.00 (1.68), throwing three and two-thirds robust frames in the nightcap, surrendering only four hits and no runs against a Taylor group that forged 15 runs and 29 hits in the twinbill.
