Men’s Track – Harris Wins 10,000-Meter To Lead M.U.
HANOVER, Ind./ST. LOUIS, Mo. –Leading a pair of Manchester University individuals in the top six, senior Blake Harris cruised to an individual championship at the Hanover College Invitational Saturday.
The Fort Wayne native broke the tape at the Alumni Stadium track in 32:15.17, better than 44 seconds ahead of the runner-up mark. Fellow senior Riley Worl was the second-highest Spartans’ runner in the field, taking sixth (34:31.20).
Harris’ title wasn’t the only solid effort on the track for Coach Brian Cashdollar’s squad. Sophomore Austin Coughlin was a narrow second in the 100, clocking an 11.21-second finish which was only six-hundredths behind Indiana Wesleyan’s Cameron Lauck. Junior Harrison Hollis added to the Black and Gold’s 52-point total, taking fourth (11.22), and he came back for a fifth-place finish in the 200 (22.86 seconds). The duo was also a part of a runner-up effort in the 4x100 (44.29) with freshman Austin Roberts and junior Matt Gasper.
In the field, senior Drew Foster registered the best placing, taking third in the javelin (158-6). Sophomore Alex Sanders cleared 12-5.5 to wind up sixth in the pole vault.
Manchester University’s first weekend of competition started at Washington University of St. Louis’ Missouri’s Invitational. Senior Alex Gudeman ran to a top-10 mark in the 5000 clocking a 15:03.35 to take ninth place.
Women’s Track – Top-Five Marks Guide Efforts
HANOVER, Ind./ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The junior throws duo of Kara Brueckman and Jacey Cauhorn each compiled a pair of top five finishes to help lead Manchester University to a fifth-place team standing at Hanover College Saturday.
Brueckman tossed the javelin 106-3 for second in the javelin with Cauhorn close behind her at 100-5 for third place. Brueckman was also fifth in the hammer (144-5), and Cauhorn wound up third in the discus (122-5) as part of Coach Brian Cashdollar’s team calculating 53.5 points.
On the track at HC’s Alumni Stadium, seniors Sarah Arney and Ruth Ritchey-Moore joined junior Shelby Harrell went three through five in the 10,000 meters and sophomore sprinter Dasia Beck registered top six finishes in the 100 (12.85 – 5th) and 200 (26.82 – 6th).
Senior distance runners Mariah Jordan and Tiffany Harber kicked off the Black and Gold’s opening weekend, each winding up in the top 15 of a strong multi-divisional field of the 10,000 at Washington University of St. Louis, Missouri’s Invitational. Jordan took fifth (36:29.5), and Harber’s 37:45.3 put her 15th. Both times rank them among the Track and Field Results Reporting System’s NCAA Division III top 15 (Jordan – fifth/Harber – 13th).
The Spartan men and women continue their 2017 campaign Saturday, competing at Huntington University’s invitational.
Men’s Tennis – Spartans Open HCAC On High Note
CINCINNATI, Ohio – If the opening dual in 2017 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference action is any indication, it could be a nip-and-tuck battle throughout.
Manchester University captured the ever-important doubles’ point to upend Mt. St. Joseph University on its home courts 5-4 Saturday. Senior Stratton Smith and junior Isaac Collis joined the duo of junior Kyler Love and freshman Dalton Bailey for wins at No. 1 and No. 3, respectively, tipping the scale the way of Coach Eric Christiansen’s crew.
In singles action, Smith and Love wound up 2-0 on the day, claiming wins at No. 1 and No. 3 in three sets each. Junior Garrett Bear added a victory at number five and did so in straight sets.
The Black and Gold, improved to 1-2 overall and 1-0 in the league. The Spartans continue conference play, welcoming rival Anderson University in their spring home opener at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Baseball – Sunday Split Leads To Series Victory
BLUFFTON, Ohio – Senior first baseman Tailur Szarenski doubled and drove in a run, while junior starting pitcher Taylor Kopplin turned in seven strong innings en route to his first win of the season to highlight a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader Sunday.
The Spartans, clinching a conference weekend series win over the host Bluffton University Beavers, got out of the gate fast in the opener with three runs scoring over the first two frames. A run-scoring single from Szarenski was coupled with a second tally crossing on a passed in the first while freshman designated hitter Joe Gallatin continued to impress at the plate with a second-inning sacrifice fly to chase home sophomore infielder Braxton Riley.
Manchester University’s quick start was enough for Kopplin, who gave up only two hits over the first five innings. Senior bullpen standout Cory Ferguson proved strong again in the final two Bluffton at-bats, moving around a run in the eighth and the tying run on in the ninth for his second save in as many games.
B.U. averted a sweep on its home Memorial Field in the series finale. A four-run third inning rally was more than enough for starting pitcher Jaylen Van Sossan who turned in a complete-game, four-hit shutout in the 6-0 decision.
The Black and Gold (7-12 overall, 4-4 HCAC) begin a stretch of four games in five days today as Otterbein University out of the Ohio Athletic Conference is scheduled to visit Gratz Field for a 4:15 p.m. first pitch.

NORTH MANCHESTER – Senior outfielder Emilee Liston and sophomore shortstop Mandy Boggs registered multiple-hit efforts in game one, and freshman first baseman Shakira Perez did the same in the nightcap, highlighting Manchester University’s 2017 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference opener Saturday.
Even with those positives on their resume, it wasn’t enough for the Spartans (7-13-1, 0-2 HCAC) to overturn the final scoreboard outcome, The visiting Mt. St. Joseph University Lions continued an impressive start to their campaign, plating two runs in the sixth inning of the opener and keeping a potential tying run on second base in the Black and Gold’s final at-bat as part of a 3-2 decision and then bringing out the aluminum in a big way at the plate in game two to the tune of 15 runs on 16 hits to win 15-1 in five innings.
Liston joined junior second baseman Laurren Ladwig (Crown Point, Ind.) with a RBI in the opener and nearly added another to her totals but Lions’ second baseman Jenny Tarter made a diving catch of a liner headed to right with Perez on second in the seventh. Relief pitcher Paige Kieswetter kept the Spartans’ fleet first-year player there for the final out with a pop up to close it out. Six MSJ hitters ended with two safeties or more in the second game, as the visitors scored two in the first and didn’t look back.
Coach Josh Dzurick’s crew looks to stem a recent span of five losses in its last six games, as they host league rival Anderson University Wednesday, April 5. First pitch is 3:30 p.m. at Spartan Field.

HARRISON, Ohio – Junior Katie Smith picked up right where she left off from the end of the fall season for Manchester University, registering rounds of 94 and 93 for a 36-hole total of 187 and a ninth-place individual finish at Ohio Wesleyan University’s Miami Whitewater Classic Saturday and Sunday.
Smith’s two-round score was just two strokes shy of the top seven for Coach Tara Boone’s Spartans’ squad. Fellow junior Kaitlin Powers joined Smith in the top 15, placing 15th (193), as she turned in a strong five-stroke lowering from the first to second rounds (99-94). Sophomore Haleigh Fernandez wrapped up the Black and Gold players for the weekend with a 196 which was good for 17th place.
Spartans Get Look at HCAC Tournament Course
TERRE HAUTE – Junior Jacob Hopkins fired off twin rounds of 84 Saturday and Sunday to lead Manchester University at Rose-Hulman’s Spring Invitational.
His 168 total left him tied for 63rd in the 98-golfer field on the Hulman Links course, home of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships’ final two rounds. Senior Andrew Topp was just 10 spots behind his upperclassman teammate, finishing at 174, due to back-to-back 87s, to tie for 73rd.
Coach Tara Boone’s quartet tallied a 730 team total. Kalamazoo College and HCAC perennial power Transylvania University finished tied for the team top slot at 603.
Manchester University’s teams return to action April 14-15, as they host thier spring invitational at Honeywell Golf Course in Wabash.
