Sometimes it’s hard to find birth records on a particular relative if there were born when home births with midwives were still the way it was done. Although midwives were required to record the birth record it could have been missed or filed at a later date. In this case it could be that it’s in the delayed birth records collection.
You may want to look at area counties and towns around the area where you think or have been told your relative is from to see if you can find a birth record there. If the person was born before 1930 you could look at the 1930 census to see if that will help you find the location of this relatives birth. If you don’t find them in the 1930 census and they were definitely born before this time that indicates that they may have not lived at this location you thought at the time of birth.
You may also have that record that was burned in the courthouse many years ago. In this case it may be a challenge and there may not be a copy of this birth certificate available in the county but there are still wants to document this relatives birth.
Another idea if you can’t find the right location for your relative you may want to contact the locale genealogical society of the area you think the relative was born and ask their volunteers for assistance. You can also search online for where to get vital records at www.vitalrec.com where you can search by state and it will show you where you can go or write and the cost to get a copy of the record you are inquiring about.
