I love to use the website www.findagrave.com, which also has an application for Apple and other mobile devices. With this website and application you can search for cemetery records. A lot of the cemetery plots have pictures of the actual gravestone, and sometimes you may get lucky and find that someone has attached pictures of the deceased or even the obituary.
If you want you can also add a photo of the gravestone or photo of the deceased to the site or on the application. This website is for most all of the states.
If you just know the name of the individual you can search that way or if you don’t know the surname of the deceased at the time of death you can search for the name of the cemetery and do an advanced search with a birth date.
For Kosciusko County cemetery research online you can visit www.beacon.schneidercorp.com where lots of volunteers have helped create a great resource for cemetery research. Volunteers went around to most of the cemeteries in Kosciusko County and photographed each gravestone and noted the information displayed on the gravestone and all this is available for your research needs on this website.
A good idea for your internet research, also, is to use your favorite search engine such as Google or Yahoo and just search for the surname you are searching for along with family tree or genealogy. You can even add the location where this ancestor was from.
Also, most of you can search and see if the area where your ancestor was born, married or died has a historical society website or at least a way to contact them. Some states have local college students who will look up things in newspaper archives for you and mail you a copy for free.
Another good resource for finding genealogy how-to books and even local family history books is to try Google Books; often books are not complete on this site but sometimes you can download the entire book free of charge. If you have a tablet or smart phone you can also use the Nook or Kindle App and find more genealogy how-to books and local family history there also.
Another website good for checking links to marriage records for your state and county of interest is www.usgenweb.org. This site has a lot of links to different states and is a good resource. Each state also has there own genweb site so you can just use the abbreviation for the state and then genweb to search on a particular state’s gen web site. For example, try www.ingenweb.org
Other paid subscription sites to use are www.genealogytoday.com, which gives you such resources as church member lists, register and histories as well as numerous transcribed school records and yearbooks. Also www.footnote.com, which works with the National Archives to bring us access to military service records of soldiers who served in the American Army during the Revolutionary War, and it also includes some Confederate Civil War soldiers.
Have lots of fun surfing the internet and discovering your ancestors!
