Scanning And Storing Photos Helps Keep Them Safe

There are many different programs out there for scanning photos. You will, of course, need a computer and a scanner.
There are a few scanning applications for the Apple iPad that are useful. Once you scan the item you can save it to your computer and make files for the different surnames you are researching so that it stays organized.
If you are using your iPad for storing these photos for easier access at family reunions and gatherings,  there are many different photo storage applications out there. To name a few there are Shoebox, Heirloom, Lyve and Pocket.  With Lyve and a few others you can actually add text above or below the photo to add the identification information.
If you have an Ancestry account, whether a paid subscription or a free version, that you have your family tree on, you can add photos, scanned obituaries and newspaper clippings to the specific person. To do this on Ancestry, you just go to the person of interest and edit their information. This is where you can add a photo or clipping. It’s a good way to keep things organized and safe.
Newspaper clippings, obituaries and funeral cards can get worn after time and can easily get damaged.
With more of these applications, you can edit or crop the photo also to get some of the size of the photo down if needed. I scanned and cropped over 6,000 photos of my family and while it was a lot of work, it makes it a lot easier to take my iPad to a family reunion or family gathering instead of loading tons of photo albums, taking those to the reunion and risk losing photos or having them get damaged.
