July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.

By Staff Report-

The Monroe School is holding a reunion from 1 to 3:30 p.m. June 8 at the Pierceton Elementary School gym. In 1917,  Monroe was one of six small schools in Monroe Township that were consolidated into Monroe Consolidated Schools. A new building was built on land located on CR 600S and Ind. 13 south of Pierceton. There were six rooms, and each room had a coal stove for heat until the 1960s, when a new coal furnace was installed in the basement. The new building was named Monroe Township Consolidated School and was moved into January of 1917. In the fall of 1953, one of the second story classrooms was converted into a cafeteria with Clara Steiner serving as cook. She served as cook until the school was closed in 1969 and the students were transferred to either Pierceton or Sidney Elementary. Shown here are a group of 5th- and 6th-grade students in the spring of 1964. Shown are (L to R) front row: Bill Bradley, David Ellenwood, Keith Nettrouer, Doug Berry, Lester Compton, Larry Manuel; second row: Paul Carlin, Michael England, Keith Carlin, Blaine Farley, Cindy McConnell, Danny Sechrist, Phil Meade, Bernice Compton, Marilyn Hoppus; third row: David Howell, Betsy Shepherd, Linda Whitaker, Hulda Francis, Linda Jackson, Judy Robinson and Beverly Francis; fourth row: Judy Prater, Rita Haywood, Betty Ellison, Elaine Carlin, Jean Sellers, Mary Compton, Patty Linn. The teacher is Colonel Likens. Many fun times were shared at Monroe School, and if you would like to be a part of sharing in those memories contact Deb at 574-594-2210 by Monday for reservations.[[In-content Ad]]
