The seminar focused on special estate planning strategies for individuals with estates of between $5 million to $20 million in value and techniques for protecting personal wealth from creditors, lawsuits, and divorces. The seminar was attended by 50 estate planning attorneys from across the country.
The program was presented by Mark Merric, who is an adjunct professor of law with the University of Denver Law School and who maintains his own law practice in Denver focusing upon high level estate planning and asset protection. Merric is recognized as one of the nation's leading authorities on estate planning for high net worth individuals as well as designing asset protection strategies using trusts, family limited partnerships, and limited liability companies.
Leininger said "This seminar was an outstanding and very rewarding educational experience. Mr. Merric taught advanced strategies and techniques for the use of trusts, family limited partnerships and limited liability companies to virtually eliminate death taxes for families with substantial wealth who, without the use of such planning, could see almost half of their wealth devoured by death and other transfer taxes. At the same time, these strategies also protect the assets from being lost in lawsuits or divorces or consumed by creditors.
"One interesting topic was the design and use of dynasty trusts. Through a dynasty trust, family assets may pass free of any death taxes over several generations and at the same time remain protected from creditors. The wonderful thing about dynasty trusts is that they are just as available and effective for families of modest wealth as they are for those of substantial wealth. I am really excited about the planning opportunities which these techniques create for my clients."
