"Although Kosciusko Community Hospital has long been committed to providing high quality care to patients experiencing chest pain, participation in this accreditation survey is yet another effort to ensure we use the highest standards available in measuring our effectiveness," said Jerry Beasley, Chief Executive Officer at Kosciusko Community Hospital. "We continually strive to improve our services to the community and are proud to be recognized with other organizations that commit to such high standards."
Every 34 seconds, someone dies from cardiovascular disease. Nationally, heart diseases and stroke kill more than 910,000 Americans annually. With prompt treatment during the critical early stages of heart attack, many of those lives can be saved.
"Five million Americans annually are admitted to hospitals with chest pain, generally through the Emergency Department," said Dr. David Hartman, KCH Chest Pain Center Medical Director. "Working in conjunction with our local EMS teams throughout the area, we can provide prompt and professional care in a dedicated location with trained staff and readily available diagnostic capabilities."
The Society of Chest Pain Centers only accredits a hospital demonstrating a high level of performance using the following criteria:
* Effective integration between Emergency Department and local Emergency Medical Services
* Ability to assess, diagnose and treat patients quickly
* Consistent evaluation of patients with low risk for heart problems
* Functional facility design for patient evaluation and monitoring
* Education and training of staff dealing with cardiac patients
* Establishment of ongoing quality improvement program
* Hospital's commitment to maintaining Chest Pain Center
* Community outreach program to educate public on cardiac issues
"If a patient having a heart attack is treated within 30 minutes, damage to the heart is minimized and mortality is decreased," stated Lynne Eberle, KCH Chest Pain Center Coordinator. "One of the goals of a Chest Pain Center is to significantly reduce the time from initial symptoms to treatment. Another is to provide continuous monitoring of patients to help determine if they are experiencing a coronary event."
Another important component of this accreditation by the Society of Chest Pain Centers is community education. Julie Bowers, Division Director of Inpatient Services said, "One of our goals is to educate the community about the risks of heart disease and the importance of seeking immediate treatment at an accredited Chest Pain Center when experiencing symptoms of a heart attack."
Bowers added, "This great achievement is a reflection of the work that our physicians and staff have devoted to meet the highest standard for safe, effective patient care. We compare our patient outcomes to other nationally recognized hospitals and we consistently meet or exceed those standards."[[In-content Ad]]
