INDIANAPOLIS- In February, Indiana dentists donated more than $478,000 in free dental treatment to underprivileged children across the state. The donations, from more than 200 dentists and 960 dental volunteers, were part of Give Kids a Smile, an annual event honoring February as National Children's Dental Health Month.

"Indiana's dentists are committed to serving the children of their communities, but an annual event will never be enough to help some children get the dental care they so desperately need," said Dr. Catherine Periolat, Indiana's Give Kids a Smile chairperson. "Children's oral health is everyone's business - not just dentists."

With the help of school nurses and local volunteers, Give Kids a Smile events are scheduled throughout February and provide services to children age 16 and younger. Most events offer free, comprehensive dental treatment, as well as oral health education.

Give Kids a Smile is an annual program of the Indiana Dental Association and American Dental Association in which dentists and other dental volunteers provide free dental services to children from low-income families.

Indiana's Give Kids a Smile program was supported in Indiana by Patterson Dental Supply and Fineline Printing and nationally by the ADA, Colgate, Sullivan-Schein Dental and Dexis Digital X-ray Systems Inc.

With a membership of more than 2,800 dentists, the Indiana Dental Association represents approximately 83 percent of all Indiana-licensed dentists in the state. The IDA's mission is to improve the public's health through high practice standards, continuous professional education, public advocacy and improvement of the practice environment.
