Indexing Your Research

If you have been researching for a while and have compiled all your research on your computer, that’s great.  But it is still a good idea to have all your research on paper also.  There is a basic form called a Family Group Sheet which can be printed offline and there are several different ones if you just google, printable Family Group Sheets you will see those different kinds of them that you can print out.
I would suggest you compile all your research that you have done thus far onto paper and put it in three ring binders and organize it from either the oldest generation down to the youngest generation or you can also organize it from the youngest generation down to the oldest generation. I would suggest doing the oldest to the youngest.
To start indexing once you have organized your binder to the way you want it. You need to number your pages in each book if you have more than one binder. Once you have numbered all your pages. You will start going thru each page and getting the names and page numbers that that person is listed on. For example when I am indexing myself, I would be on a page with my husband, I would also be on a page as a child on my parent’s page.
Once you have written down each person and what page(s) they are listed on then the easiest way is to alphabetize the list. It takes awhile to get this accomplished but it is well worth the time and effort. When someone asks you what information you have on a particular person you can easily turn to their page because of your indexing.[[In-content Ad]]
