By Staff Report-
Purchased with a grant from the Kosciusko County Community Foundation through the Carl N. Wendel Fund, the handicap accessible beds sit raised off the ground, allowing access for both those able to stand and those seated in wheelchairs. Residents enjoyed the health benefits of fresh air and sunshine, and also enjoyed being with others.
Plants for the beds, including tomatoes, cucumbers, cabbage, kohlrabi, basil and marigolds, were donated by local gardeners. Sherri Kilgore of the Warsaw Town and Country Garden Club and Sandi Wise and Lorraine Deffenbaugh of Kosciusko Master Gardeners all provided plants and seeds for the Grace Village residents.
Many of the residents enjoyed gardening or farming throughout their lives. Moving into a nursing facility often requires older adults to give up many of their daily habits and activities, such as driving, shopping, gardening and woodworking. These new gardening beds allow the residents to continue a healthful and enjoyable activity in a safe environment.
Visitors are welcome to see the garden beds, which are located in the Health Care courtyard at Grace Village. Gardening activities are held on a weekly and as-needed basis as residents tend plants and keep the beds weeded and free of pests. If you would like to be involved in the accessible garden program at Grace Village, they are still accepting donations of ergonomic gardening tools and gardening gloves.
Grace Village is the only not-for-profit continuing care retirement facility in Kosciusko County. Its mission is to enable mature adults to live to their fullest potential in the security of a Christian environment. The Grace Village campus houses approximately 350 individuals in condos, apartments, assisted living suites, health care and short-term rehabilitation.
