What is a Genforum, you ask? Well, Genforums are where people can post questions relating to research of a particular surname.
There are a couple websites that uses the genforum layout. You can use www.genealogy.com or www.usgenweb.org
Each individual state has a genweb site – Indiana’s is www.ingenweb.org
When posting on the genforum sites you can for example say, “I am a descendant of Jacob Mann who is from Scott County, Va., and I am looking for more information on this family. If anyone else has a connection to this person please contact me.”  It will go on the site where others can look at these posts and reply to them and give each other tips and suggestions of where to location this family. With the UsGenWeb site this will link you to the particular state you are researching.
I like www.genealogy.com for my genforum posts because it is more user friendly than some of the others. When using this site you can just type in a surname that you are researching and it will show you all the posts that has been made for that particular surname. From this site I have been able to connect to a couple close cousins and we have had the opportunity to meet in person and share family tree information and photos with each other. If it were not for this site, I don’t know if I would have ever got connected with them.
There are also email mailing lists that a person can get connected to, if this is something you think you may want to try. My suggestion would be to obtain a separate email address for genealogy related emails, otherwise you can get overwhelmed with all the emails.
