Fresh Monkey Gourmet Market Opens In Warsaw

July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.

A craving for an authentic hot pastrami and swiss on rye with deli mustard led a native New Yorker to open a store where she could get all the ingredients to make one and much more.

When Leslie Saul moved to Warsaw from Florida, she realized there was not a place within two hours where she could get many of the gourmet ingredients she used while cooking. Recognizing a need in Warsaw for a place that offered that option, Saul decided to open her own store - The Fresh Monkey Gourmet Market.

The Fresh Monkey Gourmet Market, 202 N. McKinley St., Warsaw, offers artisan foods, imported cheeses, cured Italian meats and specialty items.

Saul originally moved to the Warsaw area to get involved in the restaurant business. Unforeseen circumstances sidetracked those plans, and Saul's idea changed.

So The Fresh Monkey Gourmet Market was born.

With more than 24 years in all facets of the restaurant industry, Saul knows gourmet ingredients. She has worked in some of the best restaurants from the Hamptons, N.Y., to Boca Raton, Fla., to Philadelphia, Pa., and brings that expertise to her new market. A self-proclaimed "foodie," she enjoys creating new dishes that range from classic favorites to haute cuisine.

Along with the imported products, The Fresh Monkey offers gourmet foods prepared fresh, daily and fresh-baked breads as well as catering services for events of any size.

Special dishes will be prepared each day at The Fresh Monkey. Currently, the store is offering prepared Panini sandwiches for lunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday: chicken cordon bleu, the Caprese sandwich; the Mimo Italiano; the Jungle Heat; and the Fresh and Corny. To learn more about or to pre-order lunch items, call 574-372-FOOD (3663). Lunch orders may be made via telephone, fax (574-372-3660), or online at www.freshmonkey.com Home and office delivery also is available.

Other fare offered at The Fresh Monkey includes cheeses from around the world, a variety of Italian meats, homemade sweets including cheesecakes and cookies, Belgian chocolates, rare spices, flavored oils and vinegars, sauces and artisan pastas that cannot be found on most supermarket shelves. Saul plans to add wine to the offerings soon - her wine permit is valid beginning in January.

Saul said she is willing to educate people on how to use the imported products in her store. She also plans to host cooking classes in the future.

Items offered in the store will change periodically, and special orders are welcomed and encouraged. Saul said she is willing to make anything a customer wants, as long as she has enough notice.

The Fresh Monkey Gourmet Market is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m to 7 p.m. The store is behind Super Wash at 202 N. McKinley St., Warsaw.
