I want to first start out by letting you genealogists know that Family Tree Maker, the most popular genealogy software, is being retired. From what I am hearing, it will still be able to be used if you have it downloaded on your computer and that is the software that you use. It just will not have the upload capabilities that it normally did feature. There are several other genealogy software out there that can be downloaded that are just as user friendly as Family Tree Maker. Plus you can also store your research on Ancestry or Family Search for free, you do not have to pay for a subscription to either of these to be able to store your research on their website.
Especially since the announcement that Family Tree Maker is retiring its desktop software other companies have released that they have the capability of uploading your research from Family Tree Maker to their software. Some of the software’s that have made this announcement are Ancestral Quest, Family Historian, Heredis, Legacy, MyHeritage Family Tree Builder, Reunion and RootsMagic.
I personally have only used to try out a couple of these. Legacy and RootsMagic are the two that I have tried out to see if they would compare to Family Tree Maker for me. Both of these are user friendly and seems to be easy to upload information to. Some of these are a paid software such as Ancestral Quest, Family Historian, My Heritage and RootsMagic. They are giving special offers due to the most popular software retiring.
Usually when you upload your research information over to another software it uses what is called Gedcom files. Family Tree Maker allows source citations to have a link to the master source. Several of these other software’s out there do not have that capability but they are working on a solution so that this is something that can happen soon to resolve these issues.
