The Lake City Skiers claimed its fourth national championship at the 16th USA Water Ski Division 2 Show Ski Nationals, held on Saturday at Hidden Lake. The local group swept the traditional box scores for dock and equipment crew, pick-up boat crew, towboat driving, sound crew and showmanship in winning the title. Lake City, which previously won the Division 2 title in 2006, 2007 and 2014, also earned high-scoring awards for jump, doubles, pyramid, barefoot and high individual club act adding up to a total of 1510.9 points.

Playing their first home match of the season, the Warsaw Lady Tigers split with 10th-ranked Chesterton and LaPorte Thursday at Stonehenge. Chesterton, led by medalist Elyse Stasil’s round of 1-under 70, won the three-team match with a four-player  score of 332. Warsaw shot 383, beating LaPorte by two strokes.

Wawasee senior Aubrey Schmeltz was the medalist with a 43, but Concord beat the Lady Warriors 192-211 in a non-conference girls golf match Thursday at Sycamore Golf Club. Host Whitko didn’t have enough players to register a team score.

The Manchester Lady Squires finished fourth, and the junior varsity squad was fifth, in the Manchester Invitational girls golf tournament Thursday afternoon at Sycamore Golf Club. Northridge was the team champion with a 384, three shots better than Lapel and five shots clear of Bremen and the Lady Squires. Bremen won the fifth-player tiebreaker to claim third place.

Paced by medalist Madi Graham’s 2-over par 38, the Warsaw Lady Tigers finished third in the season-opening Plymouth Invitational girls golf tournament Wednesday. Tippecanoe Valley also opened its season, finishing eighth in the nine-team tournament.

HUNTINGTON – Manchester’s girls golf team finished fourth and Wawasee seventh at the 14-team Huntington North Invitational at Norwood Golf Club Wednesday.

Wawasee football lineman Austin Pearish signed a letter of intent this morning to continue his academic and football careers at Defiance College in Defiance, Ohio.

Manchester University Director of Athletics Rick Espeset announced today that Christine Johnson is taking over head coaching duties for women’s soccer. The program’s sixth head coach brings strong credentials to the position. She previously was an assistant at Fresno State University from 2005-09 and held interim head coaching duties during the 2009 campaign; an assistant at Arizona State University from August 2009 to July 2010; and led the Crown City United Soccer Club in San Marino, Calif., from July 2012 to November 2015. Johnson also starred on the pitch for the University of Florida where she was a Soccer Buzz All-American in 2001 as well as being a member of a Southeastern Conference regular season and tournament champion squad in 2001, an SEC tourney champion side in 2004 and an NCAA Division I Final Four participant in 2001. She played professionally for the California Storm and Football Club Bay Area Pride in 2009.

Manchester’s Lady Squires continued a heavy early-season girls golf schedule with a sixth-place finish at the Penn Invitational at Knollwood Country Club Tuesday.

Wawasee opened its 2016-17 athletic season with a 204-213 girls golf loss at Columbia City Tuesday afternoon.

SYRACUSE – At its meeting Tuesday night, the Wawasee School Board gave final approval to hiring former Lady Warrior head softball coach Cory Schutz as athletic director. “I am pleased to announce that we have hired a new Wawasee Athletic Director, Cory Schutz,” Wawasee Principal Kim Nguyen said in a statement. “Cory has been the athletic director at Eastern Howard Community Schools for the past two years. Some of you may remember he was a business teacher and coach here at Wawasee for 16 years. We are excited and happy to welcome Cory back into the Wawasee family.”

I was looking for some free entertainment earlier this summer, so I headed down to Boggs Park to watch some little league games.
