Tigers, Vikings Return Experienced Golfers

As the 2004 high school girls golf season is about to get under way, one local team has a target on its back, while one local coach has a target in sight. After graduating just one player, No.2 player Katrina Bonahoom, from last year's team that won the sectional, finished second at the regional and eighth at the state finals, third-year coach Chris LaLonde's Warsaw Tigers should be a team to be reckoned with. "We definitely have some experience coming back," said LaLonde."We have a big target on our backs and I want to keep it fun and keep it simple. Some of the girls thought I was crazy last year when I said we could win sectional. We won sectional, finished second at regional and then finished eighth at state. If we work hard, we can have another very fine season." The head coach at Tippecanoe Valley since 1989, Roger Moriarty needs just six wins to reach 300 for his career. His 294 career wins are a combined total of both the boys and girls teams.

Pilot Escapes Injury When Plane Slides Off Runway

No injuries were reported when a small airplane slid through a fence at Warsaw Municipal Airport and crashed onto the railroad tracks behind Rice Ford. The pilot of the Cessna 208B told police he was attempting to take off about 11:07 p.m.and didn't think he had enough power.Timothy William Myers, 44, of Three Rivers, Mich., said he started to back off the power when he saw a snow plow.He wasn't sure whether it was on the same runway as the airplane or whether the snow plow was going to cut across his path, so he "veered away and powered down," according to a police report. When Myers tried to set the plane down, he said, he was going too fast to get stopped and slid off the runway. The aircraft traveled through a fence and struck an embankment. It became airborne and then landed on the railroad tracks about 2,000 feet from the end of the runway. The accident was reported at 11:22 p.m.after Myers walked back to the airport terminal.

Booze Likely Topic At Winona Town Meeting

Part Of EMS T52C To Be Vacated

Along with two conditions, the Kosciusko County Commissioners Tuesday approved Larry Contos' request to vacate a portion of EMS T52C Lane on the northeast side of Lake Tippecanoe. The portion to be vacated is approximately 60-70 feet long. The conditions include providing an easement for future sewer lines and a reasonable residential turn-around for vehicles. Emergency medical services want some kind of access or turnaround point for their vehicles there, Area Plan Commission assistant director Matt Sandy told the commissioners. He said the sheriff's department has no opposition to the vacation and since the lane is not county maintained, the county highway department had no opposition either. However, Sandy said, the plan commission's position is that it not be vacated. "It is not a through road between T1 and T50 but it may be at some point," he said.

Child Care Needs Debated

Kosciusko County Foundation's efforts to address child care issues didn't take long to catch fire Wednesday. An invitation to child care givers, business representatives and other interested groups brought out two dozen people during a meeting in Warsaw. In less than two hours, the group debated various aspects of the issue and began formulating initial plans for action that would qualify the county for future financial government support. The availability of new funds is the result of welfare reform that includes new provisions for child care to ensure single parents are able to work. The program was led by Rick Mappin, a representative of the Dekko Foundation. The not-for-profit organization serves a six-county area and is interested in serving as a conduit with other private foundations and corporations in Indiana to assist in child care needs. Organizers hope to prioritize concerns and needs and then formulate a plan of action by July.
