Squire Streak Secures Spot At State

ELKHART -ÊManchester baseball coach Jack Rupley dripped with cold water as he talked to reporters after Saturday night's regional final. "I don't mind," he said after a covert mission by his players sent the contents of the team water cooler cascading from his head to his toes. The Squires earned the right to drench their skipper by defeating both Fairfield and John Glenn to win the Jimtown Regional and advance to Friday's state finals. The Squires defeated Fairfield 5-0 behind a one-hit outing from pitcher Todd Dale and home runs from Josh Staton and Adam Young in the morning game of the regional semifinal.Manchester then went on to win the regional 4-2 over No.6 John Glenn to earn its berth in the state finals. "Can you believe this?!", said Rupley."Oh my gosh, we're going to Indianapolis!" Glenn took a lead early in the final game, scoring one run in the second inning, but that lead did not last long.

Judge Burner Grants Injunction

Kosciusko County Superior Court Judge Robert Burner gave Sam Wideman and her family the first bit of good news in the ongoing case of her athletic eligibility at Warsaw Community High School. With his order on Thursday, Burner granted the Widemans' request for temporary injunctive relief that will allow Wideman to play until another hearing is set on the case. Burner's ruling stated that, "...the IHSAA Rule 19 is arbitrary and capricious and not supported by substantial evidence of probative value, and lacks a reasonably sound basis of evidentiary support." The ruling makes Wideman, who transferred from Tippecanoe Valley High School in the summer, eligible for the Tigers' game against No.15 Huntington North on Saturday.Wideman averaged over 11 points a game for the Vikings last season, but has been ineligible through both the volleyball season and the first four games of the basketball season.

Shorthanded Wildcats Rally Past 'Busco

COLUMBIA CITY - Whitko forgot about the past and looked toward its future Thursday in the first game of the Columbia City Volleyball Sectional. With three starters (five players overall) sitting on the sidelines because of disciplinary reasons, a young, upstart Wildcat unit fought back against Churubusco and won a tough 10-15, 15-2, 15-8 decision to advance to the sectional semifinals. Because of the absences of the players, Whitko (13-18) had only seven players available and started four sophomores, two juniors and brought a freshman off the bench.

Local Officials Await Word From IDEM, EPA On Sewer Probe

All the Warsaw mayor and city attorney can do is guess what the Indiana Department of Natural Resources and the Environmental Protection Agency have in store. The Warsaw wastewater treatment plant has been hit with a number of violations resulting from a sewage spill into Walnut Creek this past summer. In July, August and September, sludge and untreated or partially treated wastewater - quantities of surficant, polymer, whole effluent and diesel fuel - killed fish and left a deposit of sludge in the stream bed, extending to the Tippecanoe River. "We'll meet with IDEM within the first 10 days of December," said Mayor Ernie Wiggins."They've drafted a proposed settlement agreement, which we haven't seen, and we'll find out what they're wanting." IDEM and the EPA are two different issues, according to city attorney Mike Valentine. The EPA is conducting a criminal investigation.

Several Impeachment Steps Remain

As the historic impeachment votes for President Clinton loom in the U.S.House of Representative, some may ask exactly what that means. If the president is impeached by the House, will he actually become the first chief executive to be removed from office? The U.S.Constitution established the impeachment process to remove the "President, Vice President and all civil officers of the United States," i.e., cabinet officers and federal judges, from office, when their conduct is believed to have so damaged the public's confidence in their ability to perform their official duties that they must be removed. Article I, Section 2 of the Constitution gives the sole power to impeach to the House of Representatives.Section 3 gives the Senate the power to try all impeachments.
