SIDNEY — The Sidney Town Council met Monday to discuss ongoing and upcoming projects, including updates on property matters, local infrastructure and community programs.
Council provided the update that it successfully applied for a grant by the deadline for a strategic economic development plan with the help of the Kosciusko Economic Development Corporation (KEDCO).
Clerk-Treasurer Lisa Parrett provided updates on three meetings she attended. One meeting was sponsored by KEDCO regarding economic development. Another meeting reviewed the Kosciusko Mitigation Plan about public safety, which identified Sidney's need for a tornado siren. The third meeting discussed indoor fitness options provided by the YMCA. The YMCA plans to survey residents to gauge interest and determine whether classes should be held in Sidney or potentially in the nearby town of Pierceton.
During the meeting, Council provided updates on recent infrastructure improvements, including the installation of fiber at the town office. Additionally, Community Crossing Grant funds were secured for road improvements, with plans to address Arthur Street to North Street and Rose Street to Ind. 13 by spring.
The council reviewed the status of the Harney property. The deed was transferred to the town. The council spoke with its attorney about waiving property taxes.
During the citizen comment section, a resident noted multiple streetlight outages around Main Street and voiced frustrations regarding speeding on local streets. Though the council acknowledged the problem, they indicated that the resident's proposed solution of installing a stoplight would require state approval. Council said it would look into the stoplight request process, and it would request stoplight maintenance.
The meeting closed with updates on recent patrols conducted by Pierceton police in Sidney and a report on the town’s voting turnout, which saw 725 residents vote at Amazing Grace Church on Nov. 5.
Council also noted the guest speaker, who was supposed to talk about Clearly Kosciusko, did not attend the meeting.
The next Sidney Town Council meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Dec. 9 at the Jackson Township Fire Station.
