SILVER LAKE - The Silver Lake Town Council voted to contribute $250 to the Gospel Hill Pentecostal Church of God's community summer celebration and $250 to the Silver Lake Lions Club's back-to-school backpack program.

The summer celebration on July 9 will include a cruise-in, food vendors, live music and a fireworks show.

Guest speaker Matt Sandy of the Kosciusko County Area Planning Commission provided information on the county-town comprehensive plan, which the Council approved. The Council also heard from Lauren Bennett and her family, who plan to open a Christian school, Tree of Life Christian Academy, in the area.

In old business, the Council is tabling discussion of a possible ordinance that would allow in-town residents to house chickens and rabbits. Updated quotes were approved for solar panel fencing and a new furnace for the fire station.

In new business, the town is hiring a seasonal part-time employee at $15 an hour, not to exceed $7,200 total, to assist Utilities Superintendent Joey McNeal with mowing and upkeep of the park's restrooms. The Council also approved a tree removal and trimming quote for $7,775.00.

In other business:

• The claims docket was $107,297.96.

• The town is removing the $0.36 utility receipts tax from residents' monthly bills.

• The clerk's office will be closed June 12-16.

The Council will next meet at 7 p.m. July 13.
