PIERCETON - The mounds of paper produced by Whitko students may be channeled away from the landfill when the district adopts a recycling program.

Whitley County Commissioner Doug Eber spoke at the Whitko school board Monday, along with Whitley County Solid Waste Management District manager Bill Grube and National Serv-All representative Bob Young.

Eber said the district has a new contract with National Serv-All, which begins Jan. 1, and Columbia City schools are participating in the program. The solid waste district decided to extend the offer of free containers and pickup to the Whitko School Corp. as well.

The board members showed enthusiasm for the project, agreeing with Eber that much of their paper, plastics, metals and glass could be recycled.

Young said the schools in South Whitley and Larwill would receive the service and 95-gallon containers, in any amount, for free.

Superintendent Jeff Hendrix was asked to develop a plan and report back to the board.

Hendrix presented results of the Northwest Evaluation Association's Measures of Academic Progress, or MAP tests. The tests are designed to measure a student's academic growth over time and provide results in the areas of language arts, reading and mathematics.

Hendrix said all students met or surpassed expectations in language arts in grades three through nine; did fairly well in reading and "need to work on mathematics" in every class excepting grades three and seven. Students enrolled in special education also took the test without accommodations. Second graders were tested for reading skills.

The board reviewed the adequate yearly progress report, which is part of the federal "No Child Left Behind" initiative.

The board also:

• Heard Ben Nault was named a state $2,500 Discover Card Tribute Award Scholarship winner. Students must maintain a minimum of 2.75 grade point average to qualify as well as demonstrate accomplishments in talents, leadership and community service.

• Accepted the resignation of Fred Fields as Whitko athletic director. The job description is being advertised, applications are being accepted throughout this week. A new director should be named by the July 11 or July 18 meeting of the corporation, board members said after their meeting.

Other approved personnel items include the resignation of Gary McKibben Jr. as a business teacher and junior varsity baseball coach at Whitko High School and discontinued Deb Shoemaker as the JV cheerleading coach at WHS. Shoemaker will be replaced by Shawna Brubaker.

Tasha Ratliff transferred from preschool teacher to third grade teacher at South Whitley Elementary School; Sue Lopshire was hired as a media specialist; LeeAnn Snyder was reinstated as a SWES library clerk; Steve Schultz, Nancy Lake, John Strayer and Ron Cherry were hired as summer school teachers at WHS.

• Approved a contract with Whitko Classroom Teachers Association, increasing teacher salaries 1.2 percent this school year and 2.5 percent next year. Increases were made to the health insurance premiums as part of the agreement.

• Approved fall testing schedules for ISTEP (Sept. 19-30), MAP (Aug. 22 through Sept. 1) and for GQE (Sept. 20-22).

• Approved various grant applications totaling $278,539.36.

• Heard a new safety policy was developed. This policy was reduced from 100 pages to about 20.

• Heard school lunch prices will remain the same as last year.

• Heard from chief financial officer Phil Menzie that the pension bond monies can be taken from the transportation fund instead of the capital improvement fund. A resolution to transfer $100,000 was approved.

• Gave Hendrix permission to advertise for fuel and bus bids for the 2005-2006 school year.

• Set the next meeting for tonight to discuss renovations and costs for improvements at the high school.

A special meeting will be July 11 at 7:30 p.m. to reorganize the school board.

A special meeting will be July 18 to review the 2006 budget. This meeting is prior to the regular 7:30 p.m. meeting.

Members of the Whitko School Board are Dave Tranter, Hal Trump, E. Marie Trump, Pete Mitchell and Michael Braddock. [[In-content Ad]]
