INDIANAPOLIS - Of the local competitors in Saturday's girls track and field state finals at Carroll Stadium on the campus of IUPUI, Wawasee's Staci Weisser came away with the best finish.

Weisser, a junior, finished third in the high jump with a leap of 5-5. The height ties a personal best for Weisser.

Triton senior Sisteen Christian had the next best finish among local competitors. Christian finished 16th in the shot put with her throw of 36-10.5. Christian placed second in the Bremen Regional with a throw of 37-6.

Warsaw's Ginny Gardonio, who was third at the Bremen Regional and came into the state competition ranked 24th, failed to place.

"I listened to her talk," said Warsaw coach Paul Boyd. "She spoke of what she needed to do to get back next season and compete with the big dogs."

Warsaw junior Summer Boyd, who has been running with a herniated disc in her back since the beginning of April, walked away a 19th-place finish in the 800 with her time of 2:23.98.

"I'm excited with Summer's performance," said Paul Boyd. "She was disapointed with her performance. It's just remarkable what she's accomplished."

Warsaw's best finish came in the 1,600 relay, where the team of Liz Wiggins, Brittany Raber, Chelsea Boyd and Summer Boyd finished 15th with a time of 4:07.19.

"It was a season-best time," said Paul Boyd. "They came in ranked 22nd out of 27 and finished 15th. That's pretty good when you run two freshman and two juniors. Just to go down there was finishing on a high note."

According to Boyd, the team improved their time by 1.5 seconds.

Wawasee was the only local team to score any points, Weisser, the only competitor for the Warriors, scored seven points with her third-place finish in the high jump to give Wawasee a 34th-place finish. Carmel repeated as state champion with its team score of 45. Indianapolis Pike and Fort Wayne Northrop finished second and third respectively with scores of 38 and 32.

Though Warsaw failed to score any team points, Boyd said going to state was a moral victory.

"Just to go down there and see your team's name in the program, the kids would give anything for that," said Boyd. "The NLC performed well and was very well represented."
