'Weekend' Is Here

Welcome to "Weekend."

Today's edition marks the beginning of a new level of service to Times-Union readers.

As you look through your first "Weekend" edition, you will notice there is an increased number of pages.

There also is an increase in the number of features.

Each Saturday (Friday this week because of the holiday) there will be a "D" section devoted to business.

On the front of the D section, you will find "News To Use."

"News To Use" is a weekly page that delivers diverse, practical content that's relevant to your life. The page offers news and advice about personal finance, health and fitness, technology, home maintenance and lots more.

Inside the D section, along with our usual local, state and national business news, you'll find a fairly comprehensive market section.

We understand that with the advent of the 401(k) plan, many of our readers now have a vested interest in stock markets and mutual funds.

Even the most casual investor should be able to find this market information useful.

The "Market in Review" will bring you stock charts and tables and tracking information on stocks in all three major markets.

There also will be myriad individual stock and mutual fund listings.

On the lighter side, we're offering color comics. Many of your current favorites and classics are included.

Also, watch for expanded sports coverage each weekend.

The new features come in addition to our existing weekend package, which includes the local TV guide "Spotlight," NASCAR coverage in our "Home & Auto" section and USA Weekend magazine.

Of course, all of the value from our display, classified and preprint advertising also will remain.

Over the years, we've tried to contain costs and retain value for readers.

The last time we raised the price for home delivery of the newspaper was three years ago, and the last single-copy price increase was nearly 10 years ago.

Effective today, single copy price for the expanded "Weekend" edition will be $1. Single copy prices Monday through Friday will remain at 50 cents.

Prices for subscribers will increase $1 per month - less than 5 cents per day.

Readers can get the old subscription rate by extending or signing up for a new subscription by July 14.
